The Cell Phone Crisis

Cell phones are surely the most useful and trendy inventions of the 21st century. A mobile can be called as a combined video player, radio, computer, telephone and tape-recorder. What we have not noticed is the harm its doing to the world.

’’Mom, I’m fifteen now ! Can I have my own cell phone now ?’’ Today, this is the most common question asked by teens to their parents. This small gadget available with many attractive covers has about a thousand models. It has become a must-have item for almost everyone particularly teens. The market is making a booming business selling mobile phone accessories. Even adults have at least a hip-hop strap dangling from their cell. Cell phones have become an obsession for teens. They spend hours talking and gossiping on the cell with their friends. They are busy sending SMS’s instead of having a few words with their parents.

It’s rightly said that students have three duties - study, study and study. What teens today do is everything other than their duties. They concentrate on their classy outlook more than academics. Teens today believe that looking trendy and hip is very important for which owning a cell is very important. They hardly realise how much money they are spending by, first - buying the mobile and second - talking for hours hence increasing the phone bills.

The cell causes numerous disturbances as people are constantly calling you once they know that you own one. The phone may ring at any time of the day - at night, between a lecture or even when you are driving. The number of people dying due to car accidents has increased alarmingly as the use of mobile phones increased. Consider this incident - A driver was busy talking on his cell and, very blindly, he banged into a street light pole. The government at some places has finally banned driving while talking on the cell.

Recently a Times Of India headline said ’When schools expel cell phones’, a rule which was indeed very necessary. Imagine ’Dhoom Dhoom’ ringing in between your chemistry lesson! The ringtones today too, are not just plain ’tring-tring’ but they are latest songs from all over the world. People spend loads downloading these ringtones and video songs.

The idea of inventing cell phones was to help people contact you anywhere and find out your whereabouts but not only teens, the whole world has begun to misuse this gadget. One such example is MMS clip circulation case. It was certainly shocking to see such a ruthless thing happening. Camera cell phones too, are being used for totally wrong purposes. The fact that people click anybody’s picture on the street and circulate it is, by no doubt, deplorable.

To conclude, I would like to say that the 21st century is taking the cell phones from boon to curse.
