Making a choice is difficult becoz most often we do not want to be accountable for the decisions we make. Our decision making is mostly influenced by our parents, neighbors, neighbor’s friends etc etc. there is too much of peer/society pressure.
It’s funny and sad to recollect aunties or uncles saying ’’oh you got onnnlyy 70% very baaadd, my xxx-yy he got 70.5% u know, every point makes difference’’, ’’u have to do medicine, zz’s daughter got into medical’’, ’’hey, u know kk did hotel management and has his own hotel & she’s soo richh’’, ’’now-a-days in thing is bio chemistry you know and genetics too’’. ’’Oh... u didn’t get into IIT, what about IIM :-), no!! ooh you should study well’’. Isn’t that a little too much for the choosing generation????
As a start I think we should be more practical and parents should think in terms of what their offspring is capable of (oh, believe me they know, don’t want to accept it), and not pressure them into following certain trends but, guide them. All of us need guidance don’t we...
Ultimately, it’s us who live our jobs day in and day out. We could be happy and content and take our paycheque home or be miserable as hell and still take our paycheque home. To sum it up, every individual knows what he is capable of achieving, so go for it…
If you are good in math and have a flair for it, learn accountancy and dream towards being a Chartered accountant...
Good in biology study medicine, pursue being in the medical or related fields.
Don’t forget there is scope in the arts/commerce field’s public administration, economics, and history.
Of course we do have the computer field where you could be anything from a data entry operator to an IT director or a dotcom entrepreneur.
If you love kids and being around them get yourself certified to be a child-care provider.
Have confidence on stage, there is theatre or modeling.
Like to design trendy clothes - fashion designing.
Business minded, well there is no need to say ’’I dont have that business mind, it should run in your family’’. There are quite a few people doing so well in business .especially, advertising, publishing, printing, food chains etc.
If none of the above appeals to you and you spend all your time listening to music, get a degree in music, many colleges offer it.
There is no dearth of careers or institutions offering courses. When you finally choose your career after weighing all the pros and cons, stick to it and give it time . Nothing is instant, you still need to warm the milk for instant coffee…
Follow your dreams with humility and perseverance and with lil bit of luck (that’s important you know) you can make a career. And, always remember education is a life long process, you never ever stop learning.And, if at any phase in your career you feel a mental block, pause and take a hard look at your career, there is never a dead-end, you can always make a turn.
