I wish I had back all the money I wasted on the irons Ive purchased over the years. It seemed every few years I was replacing my $25US to $45US iron. If I was not replacing them then I was fighting them when they didnt perform or when they spat colored water onto my clothes.
A friend told me to spend a goodly amount of money and be done with it! So, I did. I bought the Rowenta Model DE-87 made in Germany. If they are not available locally, many stores sell them on the internet.
Ive had the Rowenta iron for almost five years now. Its wonderful. It steams my suits. It glides over my silks. It makes cottons look starched. Everything comes off the board looking like a professional press from the cleaners. And, its powerful. When you need a jet of steam, you GET a powerful jet of steam.
It shuts itself off when I rush off and forget. The water tank is large and easily visible - no tiny water-level gauge on this model. In the U.S., this model calls for half distilled and half tap water. Filling the tank is easier than other models Ive used. Rowenta built a sort of ramp for the water to flow into so you arent trying to target a small hole. (Ever notice on other models basic physics takes over and the air pressure inside wont let water in? Not with the Rowenta.) Very thoughtful design!
Some folks might think its a bit heavy but I think the weight actually helps to iron out the wrinkles and produce sharp creases.
