CMC Hospital poor administration & unethical

Here I would like to jot down our experience in CMC Hospital for my dad’s operation. I would say this was the most regretful decision we have taken to go to CMC. I am glad that my dad is alive now….My dad was admitted in CMC Vellore this month for Prostrate gland operation.

I am writing to bring to your attention the bad and very unethical experience we had during our hospital stay period. We feel our decision to go to CMC Vellore was very regretful. Operation TURP was performed, to which we were informed that the operation was successful.

After two days of operation daad had severe breathing problem, which was declared as some muscle pull and taken very light by Doctors and nurses. And the pain kept aggravating one night the pain was just unbearable. He could not sit, stand or sleep. My mother kept requesting to nurses to come and check and do something as daad was not able to even breath because breathing was causing the more worse pain.

Some standard checks like BP, fever, some blood check was done and nurses and Doctors declared that everything is normal and patient is unnecessarily creating scene by asking for help/concern/medicine for pain. Nurses behavior was very very rude which depicts the picture as if our lives were on mercy of their hands. After repeated requests, the sister called one of the doctors and the sister instead of explaining the situation to Doctor handed over the phone to my mother. My mother informed that my dad is unable to breathe or sit or lie down and in terrible pain.

The Doctor simply refused to come and said “What can I do by coming there? He is perfectly alright. “ As if to say don’t bother me. If I am not wrong there will be always one Doctor appointed for emergency calls at night and it is his duty to come and attend the patient. Then he finally came and did not even enter the room to check daad and instructed sister to give sedative to daad which will make him go sleep.

Obviously sedative worked and dad was kind of in sleep when sisters come again ask my ailing dad “Is one sedative enough or would you like one more? “ As if we are morons to not understand the difference between muscle pull pain and severe bone breaking pain. This is the height of inhumanity.( Till this time dad’s heart was rigorously trying to pass through the block in pulmonary vein, which affected his right heart.)Later in morning after CT scan and Xray, we came to that is was pulmonary embolism which was causing the pain. On reading about pulmonary embolism I understand the pain will be bone crushing pain and dad had told all the symptoms of same.

I wonder how doctors can miss the issue even when exact symptoms where told . Thanks to good doctors who have treated after CT scan. It was good care afterwards. Because of this delay daad’s right heart got suffered. Heart was perfect on examination before TURP operation.I do understand that human body is the most complicated machine on the earth and it is not always easy to pin point as what is causing the pain/issue. Doctors would take time to do the diagnosis. However this inhuman behavior from Doctors, nurses is not quite acceptable from the hospital of such high reputation.

Also they did not leave CMC in peace. On 10th April 20, 2009 we have informed that nurses that we will be mostly getting discharged the next day and ask them to make necessary preparation. They said “ fine once we come to know that you can be discharged, discharge arrangements can be made with in 2 hours “ . Still to keep some buffer we booked train tickets for next day 11th April 20, 2009 at evening time . Now dad was in Room # 418A in A block. The nurses were again very rude here and ignored our plea to fasten the things up for discharge. Though I understand that nothing was in their hands.

But there is a way to deal with people. The delay was because of the TURP operation ‘s missing Anesthesia bill inclusion. Where as while shifting from Urology dept. to A block they made us clear all the bills and then only shift the patient. You might be aware of the procedure that unless the bills are cleared. From one dept., the patient will not be shifted. Then how much they miss this before and then made us worry for discharge whole day.

Because of this delay, we were tensed till last minutes and later ran from billing dept. for the bill to paying counter from counter and finally paid the bill and could able to reach the railway station just 5 minutes before the train departure. Just imagine the tension on my daad in this condition. On top of this the in charge nurse of floor 4A asked watchman to keep an eye on us. As if we are going to run away without paying the bill! Such unethical treatment.

This shows that CMC lacked the administration skills also. Above all our trust on CMC is completely faded away. However I know that people all over India come here to get treated. We being so educated and known to issues were treated so badly. Then how will the poor people be treated here. I strongly recommend people to give second thoughts before going to this hospital…
