A Priyadarsan film

A rib tickling non-stop comedy in the first half and a love story with shades of comedy in the second half is Chup Chup Ke in brief.

When it comes to comedy, Priyadarsan is unbeatable by far. Chup Chup Ke is yet another example of Priyadarsan’s versatility.   Comedy is an emotion which is difficult to create and once it is created and planted in the audience, it is difficult to stop.   With the well supported script, Priyan did the first job of creating the mood for the comedy, within no time after the titles.   And he didn’t let you relax with a rally of comic situations.   By the time of interval, you are almost exhausted of laughter. Then, he tells the love story. Where you are booted with laughter, a small tickle here or there will make you laugh more. In Chup Chup Ke, in the second half, when you see the face of Paresh Rawal or Rajpal yadav, you started laughing without any reason, because you know what is to be followed.

THE STORY

Please read the synopsis from the film’s website

The film is an exact remake of Malayalam film "Punjabi House". In Chup Chup Ke, the family is been changed from Punjabi to Gujarati and the place from Kerala to Bengal. Few comic scenes added for Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav and few trimming in the story is been done to accommodate one additional song and the time used for the added scenes.

PERFORMANCE

The lead pair Shahid and Kareena gave mixed response. Shahid looks very odd in the beginning, but he progresses with the film and he is in full swing soon after some 15 to 20 minutes.   Kareena, on the other hand, look so cute throughout the film.   It is a treat to watch her in the new refreshing look.   She did a good role to her character. However, one has to admit that her role as the mute girl was not without fault. Understandably, her hands are not moving to express the meaning, or as an experienced mute girl. (Possibility is that I might be comparing their acting with the one in the original Dileep and Mohini, both did a wonderful job). Having said so, the leading pair has done a decent job.

I found a discussion in a forum "who is the super star, Shahrukh Khan or Amir Khan". I will say, in 2006, the question is not between Shahrukh Khan and Amir Khan, but between Amir Khan and Paresh Rawal. Rang De Basti and Malamaal Weekly had them fought each other in the beginning and both came as victorious, with two super hits. Now, Amir has given Fanaa and Paresh Rawal is with a double, Chup Chup Ke and Phir Hera Pheri.   I am yet to see PHP, but I can tell you, where Paresh Rawal appears in the screen, he gets as much acceptance and applaud a super star gets.   And mind you, he is a versatile actor as well.

Paresh Rawal has done the wonderful job in Chup Chup Ke too.    His look is different and performance as usual.   Rajpal yadav is at his best in this film.   You cannot stop laughing whenever he appears in the screen. He got a meaty role and he did it with style.

Om Puri is good, but his role is not much supported to generate the same chemistry between him to Paresh Rawal in Malamaal weekly.   Anupam Kher has only few scenes in the film, but he did it with perfection.   Manoj Joshi, for a change took a serious role as father of Pooja.   Sunil Shetty as brother of Kareena did his job neatly.   Neha as mouth piece of Kareena is good.   Sadly, Sushma Reddy is a complete unfit for the role in the film. Asrani & Shakti Kapoor only have small roles. Rest of the cast is ok.

MUSIC & CHOREOGRAPHY

Music is average. Dil Vich Lagya ve…. Aa Re Aa Re…. & Ghoomar… are good for listening, but not exceptional.    Choreography is average to above average.    There are glimpses of exceptional shots in the visualized songs.

CINEMATOGRAPHY, EDITING & SETS

For a change, color of this Priyadarsan movie is white. A lot of white is used in the back ground and in the costumes. Comic scenes in a surf white background are new experience and I have to say the experiment is paid off.    Editing is done well.   Sabu Cyril’s sets are superb, as usual. He is a master in his craft.

STORY, SCREENPLAY AND DIRECTION

Story, by Raafi_Meccartin, is good. Neeraj Vohra translated the story well.   Priyadarsan, is in his full spirit when he directs this comedy. But, regarding the love story part, I have to say, he is succeeded only half.   One thing missing in the film is a typical Priyadarsan style comedy netted ending, which would have made a huge difference.

Overall, the film is of great comedy and a decent love story.    One will not regret its viewing. Fully recommended. The film has a lot of scenes which will stand alone in any standards.   Here is a good film. What we look forward is, whether it can beat the heat of Fanaa, trend of Hera Pheri & the World Cup fever. I will say, Chup Chup Ke is a film capable of doing that.
