LAUGHTER QUOTIENT= (HUNGAMA + HULCHUL) / 2

Target audience: any one who liked Hungama, Hulchul etc

( please note I am not including hera pheri here as according to me it was a master piece.)

Watching this movie reminds me of old Indra Kumar movies(DIL, BETA, RAJA etc).

Comedy in first half, drama in second.

Well Chup Chup ke has definately more comedy in first half and lesser melodrama in second half as compared to the above Indra Kumar movies.

After watching this movie, various questions erupted in my mind. All of it later

First the movie

Well don’t try to look for a story here.Jeetu (Shahid kapoor) tries suicide to save his family (anupam kher, amita nagia and fiancee Sushma reddY) from debts.(insurance money angle)

Is saved by Rajpal Yadav who works under Paresh Rawal in a fishing hamlet in or near(i dunno)

Kolkatta.

Paresh n Rajpal mistake him for a deaf n dumb person n shahid in order to conceal his identity plays to that belief.

Shahid n rajpal lend up in Ompuri’s house(Gujarathi business man), who has lended paresh rawal some money. Since Paresh is unable to pay him, Om puri keeps Shahid n Rajpal as his servants.

Here is where the movie is immensely likeable. The first half breezes through with hilarious moments between Rajpal Yadav n Om puri’s big joint family.((25 to 30 ppl staying together, maybe more.)

Rajpal yadav continues from his role in Hungama. It is extremely difficult to contain your laughter in some scenes. After a long time, I laughed to my heart’s content watching a movie .

Well yes even Kareena is a part of this movie.Playing a dumb not deaf gul .Neha Dhupia is her cousin.Sunil shetty plays the role of dominating, yet caring cousin brother.

Priyadarshan could have borrowed from Bhansali’s HDDCS potrayal of Gujarathi family. The sets, accent in Chup Chup Ke etc seem very forced.( My being a guju , I felt bit irritated.)

But no viewer actually cares about these factors in such type of movies.

The problem begins when the director tries to insert a story inside a nonsensical yet immensely laughable plot.

This is where the plot weakens.Until now in the first half, Kareena was just a glorified extra and no one was complaining

But in order to justify her(she is a STAR) the script deaccelarates IN TEH SECOND HALF and tries to develop a love story betn shahid n kareena.

The second half lingers on with few traces of laughter thrown here n there. Lots of drama and songs thrown into the script.

Even the climax is not typical of Priyadarshan film . It is a typical filmi romantic family story ending .

Thsi is where I want to raise some questions.

a. I s it necessary to insert a story for the heck of it?N That also such a complex story. Would have been nice if it was just a boy meets gul kind of a story.(Sushma reddy’s character was unwanted.)

b. Who are the real stars of the script?

Acc to me Rajpal, paresh, , om puri, shakti kapoor etc .The whole ensemble cast.

I agree that hero n heroine are very important to a Hindi movie but today after movies like malamal Weekly , trend is towards giving importance to characters in a movie n n not justifying the presence of hero n heroine.

I think Priyan got confused whether he wants to make a laugh riot or a love story with family drama. How I iwish he would have chosen the first option.

As for performaces, Rajpal Yadav is first rate.He is an amazing actor n given a role he can overshadow any one( even paresh rawal).Credit should be given to Priyan for giving Rajpal so much footage(next to Shahid) in the movie.

Paresh, Shakti, Ompuri, Sunil, neha etc play their parts well.Kareena looks gorgeous and gives a restrained performance.

Anupam Kher (Was the money so good for u to do this movie.)

Coming to Shahid, here is a hero who dances well, acts ok n looks good. what more is expected of a hindi film hero?.(Looks like young SRK.)

The music surprisingly is disappointing.(himesh come on , don’t be so good to lesser known directors.please also give hit songs to well known directors .)

On the whole you leave the theatre with mixed feelings but with a smile on ur face.

How many recent movies have managed that?

N for me that is a reason enough to go n watch Chup Chup ke.
