Chupke Chupke is a hilarious movie produced in seventies by the duo NC Sippy & Hrishikesh Mukharjee. Hrishikesh Mukharjee is also the director of this movie.
Star cast includes all those big names of Indian cinema Dharamendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore & Jaya Bhaduri. Characters like David, Kesto Mukherjee, Om Prakash are there to give those extra doses to confuse you to make you mad. Lead male characters Mr. Parimal Tripathi (Dharmendra) and Mr. Sukumar Sinha (Amitabh) are friends and they chose teaching as their profession.
I never miss any movie of Hrishikesh Mukharjee and the very idea of projecting muscleman Dharmendra as a Professor of Botany increased my curiosity – Botany and Dharmendra – non-compatible combination. Amitabh acted as professor of English. Leading ladies Jaya and Sharmila reciprocated well to comical activities of mischievous professors. How can someone expect Dharmendra to continue acting as a serious professor of botany through out the movie? He has to do something different and director obliged him by giving him freedom to create confusion by his mischief. This creates lot of confusion and hilarious chaos.

Story
Dharmendra and Sharmila meet each other when Sharmila is on a collage excursion. Impressed by her charm Dharmendra decided to go closer. To do so, Dharmendra impersonates as a chowkidar (guard) of the guesthouse of Sharmila. However, Sharmila came to know about the actual profession of Dharmendra. Ultimately Dharmendra could impress her and get married.
Problem starts when Dharmendra came to know about the Jijaji (brother-in-law) of Sharmila who has hypnotized Sharmila by his so-called talents. Om Praksah (OP), the Jijaji, is so overwhelming in Sharmilas thoughts that Dharmendra is jealous about him. He decides to challenge OP and win some reputable position in Sharmila’s mind. In this movie, Om Prakash is very sensitive about speaking pure hind. Asha Kiron plays the role of OP’s wife.
This jealousy leads to some funny plan drawn by Dharmendra and his friends Asrani and Amitabh to tackle OP and impress Sharmila. Dharamendra became sudh hindi speaking chauffer (Pyare Mohan Illahabadi) of OP and Amitabh took the role of husband of Sharmila. However, Dharmendra and Sharmila could not hide their love for each other. So Amitabh is annoyed due to the so called illicit relation of that chauffer and Sharmila. In whole process of creating confusion, Amitabh meets one more character Jaya, shaliji of Asrani (one more funny character) and fell in love.
Jaya’s inclination to learn botany from professor of English, Amitabh created some hilarious moments. Not a great story but the writers penned it well to create confusion and some rib-tickling moments.
Writers –
Story writer is Upendra Nath Ganguly.
Dialogue is by one of the most respected persons in Bollywood, Sampooran Singh Gulzer better known as Gulzar.
Music –
Lyrics penned by is one of the most respected lyric writers in Bollywood, Anand Bakshi.
Music scored by Maestro Sachin Dev Burman. Very naturally you can expect some awesome numbers when director is SD Burman and singers are like Lata, Kishor and Mohammad Rafi and Mukesh.
My most favorite number is in this movie is ‘Chupke Chupke Chal Re Purvaiya’ by Lata Mangeshkar. This is one of the best from SD Burman.
Other two great numbers from Lata are ‘Abke Sajan Sawan Mein’ and ‘Baghon Mein Kaise Yeh Phool’ (with Mukeshji). “Sa Re Ga Ma’ by Kishore Kumar & Mohammad Rafi.
My verdict
This is one of the rib-tickling creations of Hrishikesh Mukharjee. Overall a good movie however, I do not want to rate it more than 7.5 in a scale of 10. This movie has great music, fantastic acting especially those Sudh Hindi dialogues made it unforgettable. It is common in our society where Shaliji is highly impressed by her Jijaji and some poor husband tries some futile tricks to conquer such situation. The movie is based on this and Mr. Ganguly penned that with added masala which may not be possible in real life. Do not have impressive story but great direction, acting, dialogues and music made it a memorable movie.
Dharmendra better known for his action films has done extremely well in this very different mischievous role. Om Prakash, Asrani, David, Great Kesto and the two leading ladies very well supported performances of Amitabh and Dharmendra.
A good movie and watch it if you are not in serious mood. One need not watch it Chupke Chupke because it is a family entertainer.
