Pure love .......

Could love be more pure!

I guess not. And City of Angels is one of the purest love stories ever made.

Nicolas Cage plays an angel and Meg Ryan plays a doctor in the film. The film starts with Nicolas watching Meg in the operation theatre saving a life. And instantly is enamoured by her simplicity and her charm.

Meg on the other hand is a caring person also enchanted by Nic from the time she meets him for the first time.

A definite chemistry keeps on drawing them to one another. The only hitch of course is that Nic is an angel and although Meg can see him (only when he desires) but he can’t feel her at all. Her touch, her smell are all alien to him. He doesn’t feel a thing.

But then he meets another character who was an angel too before transforming into a human being and he tells him about the concept of free will. Wherein an angel can fall from a high point and turn into a human being with feelings and all.

Meg in the meanwhile decides to get married to her doctor colleague and tells Nic to stay away from her. Nic decides to exercise the option of free will and turn into a normal human.

He rushes to the cabin where Meg is supposed to be spending the weekend with her boyfriend but finds her to be alone there. And she admits that she couldn’t have married the other guy because she is so much in love with him.

They spend a beautiful night of love together and the next morning she goes on her bike to the supermarket to fetch some groceries but as destiny would have it, meets with an accident and dies soon after.

The last scene of the film is where Nicolas is in conversation with a fellow angel and he asks him if he knew that she was to die the next day would he have given up his eternity? And Nic replies: ’’For one touch of her hand, for one kiss of her lips, for one smile of hers ..... all eternity is worthless.’’

Quite an unbelievable story but the execution is what makes it rather interesting and believable. You actually start believing that angels do exist and they do have that immense love and care in them.

The performances of the lead cast just add to it. Meg Ryan is natural as ever. But it is Nicolas Cage that takes all the adulation. His performance is brilliant undoubtedly but what is more credible is the entire body language and the different attitude that he has adapted that just adds to the character he plays.

City of Angels is a must film to watch for everyone who has been in love or who dreams of that perfect love.
