Classmates is one of those rare Mallu movies, which contains loads of style and substance and does not need many big names to run on its own. In an age when big stars like Mammooty and Mohanlal are getting down to playing roles that makes them look like buffoons, this is one movie that comes across as a real freshner.
The movie starts with a college ex-students function held in the memory of Naren, son of Balachandran Menon. The classmates include Prithviraj, Indrajeet, Kavya Madhavan, Jayasuriya, etc. The tension among the various students is palpable and a sudden suicide attempt by Prithviraj leads us to a flashback by Indrajeet about the college life. The politics and the various machinations that each student carries against the other makes for most of the flashback.
The climax of the movie is interspersed with a lot of twists and turns that will make you sit on the edge of the seat. A well told story, it makes you laugh with the students, fall in love with their antics, angry at how the political battles are being fought and finally, your heart goes out to Balachandran Menon who comes to know a lot of truths.
Prithviraj and Indrajeet, brothers in real life, live it up in the movie as roomies Sukumaran and Pius, belonging to the same political party and acting as each others buddies in all times. Kavya Madhavan is good, doing justice to whatever was needed from her. Jayasurya is a revelation, coming out as a scheming upcoming politician, who comes to realises his mistakes towards the end. Naren also does a wonderful job and so does life love interest. Also commendable is Balachandran Menon, seen in a good role after a long time.
A very interesting movie indeed. Dont miss it.
