I had heard rave reviews about this movie from my friends, my brother & also here in Mouthshut & hence, I decided to watch this movie. I was not to be disappointed.
The film begins with a shot of an eagle & the methods it uses to catches its prey. It waits for hours, days, weeks & even months to catch its prey or to ensure that it will get sufficient food in a particular area.
This simile is depicted to show how the underworld functions. It functions in an organised way like a regular Company , only the means used are illegal. There are no documents, no cheque payments, everything is by word of mouth & in cash. Ajay Devgan as the Don, shines in his role with Manisha Koirala as his wife who is just there to add some glamour to the movie.
But it is Vivek Oberoi as the new henchman & later on the rival gangster who steals the show. With his rugged features & his down-to-earth portrayal of a small-time goon who later makes it big, he displays a lot of variety & depth in his acting. Mohanlal, as the Police Commissioner, also plays his part well, although his Malayali accent shows clearly.
The draw backs I would say is the story-telling in the background which at times makes it look like a documentary.
The title song, Gandha hai, par dhandha hai is a smash hit as it suits the scenes being enacted very well.
The plus points I would say is the storyline, camerawork, & direction. Varma once again proves his mettle with this movie.
