Ive had a Compaq Armada for several years and recently got it replaced with a Toshiba Satellite.
With respect to functionality the Armada seems fine but the problem starts a few years later. Ive noticed that most models with the passive LCDs have this problem. The LCD becomes really dull and after sometime, it just becomes totally blank. The laptop works fine but only the LCD is of no use after a while. The problem is that the screen cannot be replaced and has to be purchased separately, which costs a fortune.
A colleague of mine who was also using the same model, encountered the same problem.
On the other hand, Toshibas fare better. The most that can happen, is the hinge that connects the screen to the board may become loose. This can be replaced but doesnt cost that much.
Lately, there are a lot of new models of Compaq that may be much better but in anycase, do remember this problem. You might pay a little more for other brands but its worth it in the long run.
