It was free and surprisingly good too!

Usually, when something is free, it’s not the best, but ............. ..................................

My Compaq IJ600 printer came as a free bonus when I purchased my new computer from Compaq back in January. So actually any type of print job it does is better than not having a printer at all.

I was kind of surprised though, how easy it was to hook up. I removed it from the box, placed the 2 ink cartridges in, plugged in two plugs(USB connection), inserted the install disk and within 10 minutes it was up and running!

It uses a Lexmark driver and Lexmark ink cartridges, with a top paper loading feature, which I like better than the bottom tray feature.

The paper feeder holds 75-100 sheets of plain paper easily, and I haven’t had any problems with paper jams at all. It can also hold up to 10 envelopes or 10 sheets of greeting card quality, gloss paper. Also, because it is a top loader, you can insert long (banner type) paper in and it works beautifully.

There are easy to understand controls(all self explanatory) that even a novice like me can follow easily to change and customize the print settings.

When I inserted the disk to install the printer there was a test sheet that printed out with very simple instructions on how to set the printer for the best quality prints.

The cartridges, although a little expensive ($43.00 for both, ordered from 123 inkjets.com or $54.oo for both at Walmart)) last quite a long time and are a snap to install. And there is an indicator showing you just how much ink is left in each cartridge and also a warning message comes on letting you know when the ink is low.

While this may not print top of the line professional prints, it certainly serves my purpose quite well. The black and white prints come out quite clear and sharp, while the color prints on plain paper tend to be just a bit grainy. When I use gloss paper though, the colors are true and quite sharp.

Oh, and if you happen to lose the disk for installation, not to worry, you can download the installation from the internet website onto your own disk.

This printer also complies with all FCC rules and regulations and is listed as as an Energy Star product, which promotes energy efficient products.

And last but not least Compaq is always available online, by mail or phone for helping you with any problem you encounter.

I would recommend this printer to anyone who just needs an everyday type of printer, even at the regular retail price of $99.00.

For once, something free is actually something good!
