A computer at home almost became a necessity. My wife had to do many things and my kids wanted to learn new things. I went around the market and exhibitions. Saw demo of several popular brands like HP, HCL, WIPRO. I have a prejudice in favour of WIPRO even today. But the people at the centre could not demonstrate the multimedia capabilities. Then I visited a Compaq showroom nearer to my residence. The demo more than convinced me to go for it though it cost me more than Rs.10, 000 over WIPRO. I have this pride possession with me for a year and half. I was not impressed by the demo of other brands. It looks great and performance superb. It is easy to use, my 4 year old son watches movies like Babys Dayout, Dunston Checks In, Hero No.1 etc., can adjust sound levels, screen size etc. on his own. Initially the system used to hang, after a month or so this problem stopped. The only problem in Delhi is service, it is not that very prompt. The cost advantage is against Compaq. The Recovery Disk concept has put the users into a great disadvantage i.e. they have to virtually depend on the service engineers. It is a bit too difficult even to somewhat knowledgeable users to use recovery disk. These three aspects need to be addressed by Compaq to have more market share. Even though advanced models have appeared on market with P4 processors, this model should fit all home users for another 10 years to come.
