THE MOVIE
Actually it was the computer game based on the movie that forced me into seeing this movie. I have always liked those horror movies and those based on supernatural happenings, demons, ghosts, vampires and hell. Even if Constantine is not exactly a horror movie, it may be the most suitable genre for it as it does have some foul creatures to support it.
Based on the DC Comics/Vertigo Hellblazer graphic novels, Warner Bros Pictures presents the movie Constantine which is mostly about demon slaying and finding the answers of some questions. Constantine manages to be a different movie even if it is just another supernatural thriller.
The movie has got a mysterious feeling throughout it, and manages to give some confusion to the viewers even if it explains lots of things. There is a hidden chance that there will be lots of doubts that may arise after watching this movie, better not miss any of the words spoken in the movie. Considering the other movies being released, this one is a very good choice to make.
Hell wants him. Heaven wont take him. Earth needs him - these three sentences may be enough to attract some of the viewers to the story of a demon slayer who has already been to hell, with the ability to see the demons and angels with his naked eyes, not to forget those half-breeds who are half-human and half devils or demons.
THE DEMON SLAYER
History tells about an ancient Roman emperor Constantine the Great, but we are up here against another Constantine. John Constantine (Keanu Reaves), who has the curse (or may be blessing) to identify the non-human creatures, has got his liver under the worst condition due to his high level smoking habit. He has been to hell for two minutes after trying suicide before being lead back to the earth.
Still having enough problems with the demons, he comes up against a police officer, Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz), whose sister has committed suicide by jumping down from the top of the mental asylum where she was admitted as she was seeing things that no one were supposed to believe.
As Angela seeks the mystery behind the death of her sister with a belief that she would never commit suicide as she knew well that her soul would go straight to hell by that act according to the belief. Now its Constantine helps her in the quest. At the same time, the son of Satan is said to be all prepared to unleash his power on earth!
THE SKILLS
Keanu Reeves, with the Matrix fame, is not very bad, but he stays with the emotionless face on lots of occasions. Well, atleast this movie was surely better than the second and third parts of The Matrix, Reloaded and Revolutions. Weisz has done a good job as Angela even in the darker parts of the movie. She has got her emotions going very well, may be even better than in The Mummy.
The movie has some good special effects and the hell shown in the movie looks very much different from the concepts in anywhere else. The demons are also well shown. But the movie may seem a bit dragged in some parts as there are some idle moments which could have been avoided.
The movie has a good and a diverse concept, but may be it was not created perfectly. The weak spots could have been avoided and the movie could have gone at a faster rate. There was surely the option for more addition and removal as the topic is vast and not fixed! May be it was the hype that lead this movie.
The bottomline is that the movie can be good choice to go for, but dont expect any huge treat, but it is still above average. Horror movie fans may have mixed feelings about this movie as it doesnt provide very much of anything to be scared and have nightmares. The demons does look evil, but not as much scary as you would expect them to be.
