|| chalo ab bahot hogaya ||

Cookery shows never catch my attention usually..as I never end up making anything on these shows..

But I used to like watching those DD1 craft/art afternoon shows.

Two decked up women would come with bright nail polish on their pedicured hands and after a brief focus on their faces, one can only see their hands with scissors, gum, paper, and colors. And some voices which would go :

  • acha.. ab aap iss par thoda chipkane waala padarth lagaiiey (lol, why cant they say plain ’gum’)

  • ji haan, phir kaate ne ki vastu le (but they wont say scissors lol...) aur isse kaatiye.

  • aur, isse banene ke liye.., yeh paper, yeh glass piece, yeh cardboard sab aapko bazaar mein miljaayega (actually yeh product bhi, jo hum bana rahe hain. .woh bhi bazaar mein mil jaayega) lol !

=====================

All said and done, I still enjoyed those ’’crafty’’ programs.

Atleast they maintained some respect for each other and behaved formally on the sets.

======================

The same ’’two people - standing and talking idea’’ has been implemented in so many shows thereafter.

Cookery shows have copied this theme the most and have mushroomed out on all possible channels. One such cookery show is the Tarla Dalal show.

I watched 4-5 random episodes of the show to see if it could generate some interest in me to sharpen my CUlinary Skills ...

but all I could find was, me getting more and more interested in ’’Tarla’’ and ’’Sudhanshu’’ dialogues.

==========================

A typical Tarla Dalal program would go like this........

Sudhanshu : aaj hum aapko ’’xyz’’ item banaa seekhayenge with Tarlaji

Tarla: chal chal.. bahut baatein hogayee, ab meri thodi madad karde chal...

Sudhanshu : ab hum iss sabji ko kaatenge, Tarlaji batayengi hame....

Tarla: aree ? kya kaatenge.... kuch nahi.. !!! hum eensabko mixie mein daalenge abhi... .. tu thoda dyaan de haan .... cooking mein ...

Sudhanshu: (thinking) : shes so rude......damn it.

5 minutes later......

Tarla:( picking up a ladysfinger ) acha.. ab yeh kya hai, chal jaldi bata

Sudhanshu :(dumbly) bhindi hai

Tarla: haan very good....

Tarla: (picking up some salt) acha.. yeh hai salt, kya hai ???

Sudhanshu :(dumbly) salt

Tarla: haan very good....

Tarla: (taking yellow colored masala in hand) acha.. yeh hai haldi, kya hai ???

Sudhanshu :(going bonkers !!) uhhhh haan..turmeric..

Tarla: haan very good....

In between Sudhanshu manages to crack some PJs which come as a relief and the bored, sleepy and half-tired audience manage to situp and smile.

Tarla is now trying to do some serious cooking like frying etc

Tarla: aree, kya khada hai... ab hala issko (she means.. hilana issko meaning : mix it.)

Sudhanshu :(getting confused) acha, to audience ko mein batadu ke iss mishran mein aapne, thoda milk, curd, haldi, daal, aur paneer dala hai..aur kya kya hai ?

(Warning : dont even try mixing these together, this is just my imagination since I cant remember what he exactly said that day... lol).

Tarla: woh sab chod, jyada baat mat kar, chal ab issko hala aur kuch kaam kar.. kitna baat karta hain...

The dish is ready finally..yawn.. and now .. concentrate hard on the screen because, in a minute they will show you the entire procedure in the form of tabular data, and you have to be rather quick to jot down everything

Tarla : (beaming) : acha chal, abhi ’’chaakkh ke dekh’’ lekin pura mat khana...

Sudhanshu : (so glad its over) : wah , wah.. kya swadisht khana hai, so audience ko mein phir bataadun... isse banaane ki reet .. pehle aap ..

Tarla : (beaming) : acha woh sab baad mein, pehle thoda clean karne ka help kar chal !!!

Conclusion

I didn’t much appreciate the show, didnt like the way Tarla behaves on screen. She may be informal or affectionate to Sudhanshu or whatever but she doesnt have any communication skills.

If she is really a good cook, she should polish her speaking skills first and treat the show’s host with more respect. She seems to be cooking in the studio as if shes in her own Kitchen and doesnt realize that the audience needs to know at every step what she is doing.

I personally find her a little over smart and pompous who thinks the audience cannot differentiate between salt and sugar.

She may be a good cook, I don’t deny that, but I am not very satisfied with the way the she presents herself on the show.
