First of all, Corner House is a great place to go for an Ice Cream, with a good variety of treats to choose from. One of the best in Bangalore. But there is one particular item to be careful about :) ....
I had heard of it earlier but I was totally unprepared for this. But the moment I saw it I knew I had signed my Death Warrant. They call it Death by Chocolate and you can get it in any Corner House in Bangalore for 75 bucks. (By the way, do not confuse this with the similar alcoholic drink)
Background info. History has it that the art of cocoa brewing was brought to Europe by the Spaniards who stole the idea from the Aztecs in 1519 while plundering the New World. My strong hunch, after a dose of Death By Chocolate (DBC), is that DBC was simply a devious concoction designed by the Aztec priests to ward off invading armies. Hence it is surprising that this dangerous formula has achieved cult status.
While chocolate can make you fat, this will do so without even letting you enjoy eating it. The simple act of eating it means undergoing great suffering to finish off what you started. The sight of poor souls trying to finish off the last teaspoon is quite amusing to onlookers.
Ok enough of the bad press. Death by Chocolate is composed of three big scoops of ice-cream (vanilla), with a lot of thick Black Forest cake spread over it, this is now soaked in liberal amounts of Chocolate Sauce (you can order extra sauce - at your own risk), and is topped off with a few cherries.
The first bite is heaven - the taste is irresistable - creamy vanilla on black forest. But halfway through, the truth slowly dawns on you. Every succeeding spoonful takes a mountain of effort. You feel like you are slowly turning into chocolate, everything looks brown and smells like chocolate. With the last bite (if you manage to reach it), you experience a triumphant feeling, like perhaps the feeling Edmund Hilary experienced on reaching the peak of Mt. Everest. By the way, if youre with girlfriend/boyfriend, you will probably feel intensely in love, due to abnormally high endorphin/dopamine levels - making it a favourite on Valentines Day :)
After a successful completion of this ordeal, stand up slowly and make your way carefully out. You will feel giddy or high, so make it a point not to give any passing policeman the wrong idea. Do not drive until it clears up. And take care.
All this said, I still feel that everyone should have DBC at least once in his/her life (on Valentines Day of course) and then decide how they feel about it. A safe option would be to order one DBC for two/three people to avoid the intended overdose. Or try any of the other truly excellent treats at Corner House.
