Upon my faith - Ma foi

When after 4 years of being together, my relationship with my first love ended. I was emotionally broke to say the least. I honestly did not know what to do.

Then I chanced upon a novel which I have read some years back. Trust me that is the biggest favour I did myself till date. It is without any effort that one identifies with Edmond Dante, the protagonist of the plot. And I was no different in that respect.

Allow me to give you a brief introduction of this singularly magnificent story.

Edmond Dante is an adept sailor, committed to take care of his ageing father and to marry a beautiful damsel named Mercedes.

Just when everything seems to be going for our hero we see him fell victim to the conspiracy of his jealous friends. Poor Dante is put behind bars to rot for rest of his life for a crime he didn’t commit.

Providence brings him out of the trap that his enemy laid for him & empowers him to seek vengeance from them. It won’t have been a great epic that it is if it was just another run of a mill avenging story. It shows us the dilemma our hero face when he seek justice for himself in his new found avatar of “The Count of Monte Cristo”. In the end our hero is compelled to evaluate the implications of his revenge on others who neither did harm to him nor nursed an ill will for him.

On a personal note, reading this book helped me immensely because it was through this book that I reconciled with the fact that I am not the only one who has been wronged in the mirage we call love.

And to those of you who thinks it is just another piece of fiction, I would say “monsieur – you are mistaken”. For very few people know that Alexander Dumas took this plot from the real life story of a man named Francois Picaud. Picaud was falsely implicated in a case. He returned to claim his vengeance.

After having the pleasure of reading this magnum opus twice I think I would not be guilty of exaggerating facts by asserting that Alexander Dumas was really a great social scientist. For out in the world we find people who fit rather comfortably in the shoes of Edmond Dantes, Fernand, Mercedes, Danglars, Villefort. , Morrel etc.

Alexander Dumas’s genius lies in bringing in different characters at different points in novel and then intertwines their stories to the central theme of the story. It’s indeed difficult not to fell in love with this book.

Upon my faith, take this book and I promise you that you will find yourself a changed man/woman by the time you finish it. Such is the magic of this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The last words of this novel have given me an inspiration to last a life time. They are- “wait and hope”.

I take your leave with the confidence that you would be kind enough to yourself to read this novel & discover the pearls of wisdom it has to offer.
