First Film of Yash Raj Banner - Daag

Background :

Yash Chopra, younger brother of B R Chopra had worked under B R Chopra banner for many years and given some good films. At last he decided to do on his own. He came of the B R Banner and set his own - Yash Raj Films. Thus Daag is the first film of Yash Raj banner. We don’t know the truth but it is said that when Yash Chopra had no money and he went to Rajesh Khanna with the script and proposal. Rajesh Khanna was on the Top of the world that time. He liked the idea very very much. He agreed with the project and this is how it came about. So Daag was financed by Rajesh Khanna.

The Story :

Daag is based on Thomas Hardy’s ‘The Mayor Of Casterbridge’ and Gulshan Nanda’s novel ‘Maili Chandni’. In current trend we can say that it is inspired from the movie called ‘The Mayor Of Casterbridge’.

Like always, Yash Chopra had preferred a Love Triangle. It was Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore and Rakhee.

Sunil (Rajesh Khanna) and Sonia (Sharmila Tagore) get married and go to Honey moon. But they meet with an unexpected problem. Rajesh kills Sonia’s would be rapist. He has to run away from his wife. He is trying to establish his new identity and set somewhere in life. During that he meets Chandni (Rakhee) and ends up marrying her to give her illegitimate child his name.

Then Sonia, Sunil and Chandni meet each other but Sunil is recognized by law. He is now charged with two cases, double marriage and murder. What happens to Rajesh, who helps him all this questions get unfolds when you will watch the movie?

Music and Song :

Music: Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

  1. Hum Aur Tum by Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar

  2. Ni Main Yaar Manana by Lata Mangeshkar, Minoo Purshottam

  3. Ab Chahe Maa Roothe by Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar

4. Main To Kuch Bhi Nahin (Shayari) by Rajesh Khanna

  1. Mere Dil Mein Aaj by Kishore Kumar

  2. Jab Bhi Jee Chahe by Lata Mangeshkar

  3. Hawa Chale Kaise by Lata Mangeshkar

As usual Yash Raj music was of top quality. It is really hard to find the best song out of all 7 but I can give you list of my favorite. I like ’’hum aur tum’’ and ’’Jab Bhi Jee Chahe’’. Shayari - Main to Kuch bhi is also very nice.

There are some interesting facts I got from internet... here are those

  1. This was the first film under banner Yash Raj Films, box office was not doing well at time so they had released the film with very few prints. But with in one week the release, they had to sent more than double prints again to market looking to response of people.

  2. Yash Chopra went on his honeymoon, and when he returned, he decided to form his own movie production company by leaving his brother’s B R Films. So who influenced him to work separately?

  3. This movie was also about tension between the two leading ladies. Yash Chopra had supported Sharmila in all way by giving good role, it was Rakhee who had walked away with all praise and awards.

  4. ‘Daag’ was released a few months before Raj Kapoor’s ‘Bobby’. ‘Bobby’ was the beginning of Dimple Khanna’s stardom. And ‘Daag’ was the beginning of the end for Rajesh Khanna.
