Eid Mubarak

====*

Salman Bhai couldn’t have a delivered a better Eid present to his brethren and his countrymen.

Eid & Weekend.*              To get to the significance of Eid, one must first understand the meaning of Ramzan. ‘Ramz’ means to burn, and fasting is considered to burn down ones sins.

The principle behind Roza is to understand the plight of the poor and pledge to live a more significant and meaningful life. The last few days of the austerities of Ramzan gently give way to the excitement of Eid. This feeling can only be compared to the one in school, of yearning for the summer break during the endless days of exams. As Eid is round the corner, markets get livelier. People crowd the bazaars to buy new clothes for member of their family.  Eid is also an occasion for family reunions. So this movie release on this auspicious occasion found merry and celebrating crowds thronging the malls, including the school kids and office goers enjoying a double weekend.

This movie rocks*** if crowds in the cineplexes, and the hooting and the cheering that goes on in the hall when Inspector Chulbul aka Robin Hood Pandey delivers  a punch or a punch line, with equal aplomb and flair, bringing the UP badland baddies to book, are to be believed. No wise cracking critic can claim to be a better judge than the greatest fool of an audience, and in this case the audience wins hands down delivering a rocking thumbs up to this movie that reminds one of the excitement that action sequences of biggies of yore like Dharmendra, Pran, and Amitabh brought to the hall. The audience are more reserved these days and rarely whistle, but in this movie you gotta see them to believe . So, on behalf of the audience I give this movie a high five!**

Robin Hood Pandey is a debonair, dabangg policeman, hot of body and hotter of the temper. He doesn’t mind siphoning off a bit of the baddies loot to his personal use, bringing small creature comforts of life to his dysfunctional family. Salman is pitted against the local neta, Cheddi Singh, who is running the local illicit liquor manufacturing establishment. His run ins with the law often bring him on a path of conflict with the lawman. Along the way Salman falls for the local village belle, the very dusky Sonakshi Sinha or Rajo, the daughter of our very own Shatrughan Sinha. She reminds one of Isha Deol, and if her sour expression is anything to go by, perhaps she will enjoy as much shelf life. She has lithe figure, a sharp tongue and enough oomph in a sari that Mallika Serawat can not acquire in clothes 1/10 th that size.(She is great fan of Salman in real life and lost 30 kgs at his bidding).* Salman also has a twisted childhood and family comprising an asthmatic mother(Dimple), a thieving good for nothing step brother(Arbaaz the nobody), and a greedy step father( Vinod Khanna). These people also cause enough anguish to our Robin Hood, and get ensnared in the wicked maneuverings of Cheddi Ram, who pits Salman’s family against him to eliminate him. In the end, poetic justice is done and good wins, with a lot of help from the action sequences, special effects, fireworks, violence and mayhem. The movie aspires to deliver no social message, there are no moral lessons learnt, and there are no subtle political expose’ - its all The Bang***(Da Bang) – sheer cinematic entertainment. The director has not lost focus at all and put his nose where the money is. The movie panders to the audience, and gives them what they want most – time pass and paisa vasool.**

So you got wonderful music and two catchy tunes – ‘mast mast naina and munni badnam hui’*, that everyone seems to be humming. This movie has action, romance, silly humor and a larger than life hero, with whom the audience identifies immediately, and gets transported into the wonderful, fictional world of his super adventures, providing a cathartic relief from our daily drudgery.

Incidentally, Octopus Paul baba has prophesied that Dabang will be a superhit movie!
