Dakshineshwar Kali temple is situated in the outskirt of the Kolkata city on the bank of river Hooghly( the Ganges). The name of the place is also Dakshineshwar. You can reach to this place by bus, train and car as it is well connected to the other part of the city.
I went to this temple in local train from Sealdah station and it is around 30-35 minutes away from Sealdah by train.
Maa Dakhinakali is worshiped in this temple. It is established by Rani Rasmoni, a wealthy widow from a Zamindar family in Kolkata.Sri Ramkrishina Paramhansa Dev, a religious prodigy was a priest in this temple and he witnessed Maa kali in this temple, and it is a recognized religious place since decades.
The temple is 100 ft in height and constructed over a huge space. There are other small temples in hut pattern which are dedicated to Lord Shiva. There is a small temple of Radha Krishna too. We have also seen the small house where Sri Ramkrishina Paramhansa Dev used to stay.
Located on the bank of river Hoogly, this temple is neat and clean and nicely maintained. The cool breeze of the river will give you a peaceful mind with spiritual ambiance. I really liked to sit on the bank of rive just beside the temple. We went down the stairs and also took blessings from Maa Ganga, the river. Some of the devotees take bath in the flowing river too.
You can offer puja to the deity Maa kali and everything can be done at your own will. There is no Panda or tout to disturb you like other temples in India. So, It has been a nice experience to offer puja. There are stalls in a row to purchase puja stuffs together and you can purchase as per your choice.
As it is a very famous religious place, there is a huge rush of crowd on the auspicious days like Mahalaya, Snan Yatra, etc. People often come here to perform the rituals for their ancestors.
There are several eating places, hotel nearby. As most of the devotees come here in fasting condition, they like to gorge on the foods available nearby after offering prayer and puja to Goddess Maa kali. We ate our full course lunch in a hotel, some people were eating tea, snacks etc.
You can ride the boat on the river Hoogly to go other side in order to visit Belur Math. Belur Math is the well knowns establishment of Ramkrishna Mission, formed by Swami Vivekananda, who was a disciple of Ramkrishina Paramhansa Dev. We took the boat ride and reached Belur in the afternoon time. This journey was really wonderful.
If you are inclined to religious stuff, the first thing you like to visit in Kolkata is Dakshineshwar Kali temple. The local railway station is also named as Dakshineshwar and the station building is a replica of the temple.
I do not think this place needs any recommendation as religious people come here out of their love and devotion of Goddess Kali.
