David Beckham is one of the most popular footballers in the world. But does he deserve the popularity? I don’t think so. Anyway the guy is more popular for his media-attracting frivolities than his actual game.
Beckham was transferred to Real Madrid recently. The question is do Real need Beckham? The only things he’s good at are his crosses and free kicks. Real with Zidanne, Figo and Roberto Carlos don’t need any 1 more. I think the real reason that Beckham was taken by Real is the endorsement money that Beckham will generate.
Let’s look at some of Beckham’s problems. He can’t play with the left foot. He can’t dribble well. He can’t give good ground passes. He needs a lot of space, else he’s useless. I’m 100% sure that he is going to have problems staying in the Real Madrid 1st 11, just as he had problems staying with Man U 1st 11 at the end of his career.
To think of it Beckham is more popular in Asia than in Europe. Maybe it has something to do with the Europeans having more understanding of the game than the Asians. Also all the popularity stems from his ever changing hairstyle, fashion statements etc. etc. Ask all of the Beckham fans which position on the field he plays and I’m sure 80% won’t be able to answer that.
Just try this experiment - Take a look at the last 20 news articles about David Beckham in the newspapers. How many of them actually concern football? You’ll be shocked at the results - there will be hardly any.
