Well I have been a Degchi customer for like 10 years now. I Always go there when I am in Chandigarh. The one thing I can say about Degchi is that the management has maintained the high standards with which it started. Food is hardcore punjabi but they do have other stuff like chinese and other fast food.
My recommendations- Degchi Special Chicken. It is out of the world. Heavy gravy with button mushrooms. it is absolutely delightful. Its Butter Chicken also gives a run for the money to the Butter Chicken from MG’s. The Chilly Chicken is also lovely and it is my favourite if I only want to have some snacks with my drink. Not to miss the Tandoori Chicken, which is also great.
Degchi offers some great Indian Breads like Naan, Paronthas, et that go really well with all the rich gravies. I have not had much experience with the chinese and the ’fast food’ at Degchi’s, but I am sure they are good too.
When Degchi had opened everybody used to say that it won’t run because of Goldie’s Roost and Pick ’n’ Move in the vicinity. But Degchi has proven everybody wrong as it has been doing great business and satisfying the palate of not only the Chandigarhians but also of people from outside.
Now for the downside- Since Degchi is a take away mostly, people come in cars and park in the parking lot and order food. The problem is that most of the people in those cars are either drunk or drinking and this can be a problem at times. But now there are a few cops always on duty there at night and lately nothing untoward has been reported.
All in all great value for money. An experience for the foodies.
Well writing all this has made me really hungry so I am off to Degchi’s for a Chicken Biryani that I did not mention earlier. It may not be Dum biryani or the Andhra Biryani but it is very yummyyyyy...Take Care.
