Is rang badalti duniya mein

Kya tera hain kya mera hain

Dekh Bhai Dekh…Dekh Bhai Dekh!

Har shaam ke baad savera hain…

In this era of family dramas where villainous women scheme and plot against their counterparts, where men act as mere puppets, where irritating kids render hi-funda dialogues at every given opportunity, where everyone takes turns to lose their memory, where everyone competes against each other as to who can cry the most and the loudest, it came as a major relief and surprise when I heard the title song of one of my favourite sitcoms..Dekh Bhai Dekh!!

The rerun of this popular TV show is available on Sony at 5:00 pm every week from Monday to Friday. I was delighted to see a saas who has other things to do rather than devise the next devious plan to murder her bahus. I was relieved to see the bahus sharing a nice rapport with each other and wearing normal salwars rather than look like Christmas trees. It was a pleasure watching the kids behave as kids for a change and just loved to once again see a family who could laugh and tease each other and bring a smile on the viewer’s face!

Welcome to the Diwan parivaar!

Daadiji and Dadaji:

The role of Dadiji was played by Sushma Seth. She is a busy socialite who is involved in various charity organizations. She is the stern one in the house and is undoubtedly the head of the family. I love the way she gives a sideways glance and says with a suppressed smile “Sameer….” when her younger son makes some wisecracks. Dadaji, a hen-pecked husband is a loving, endearing person seen with the kids and is mostly upto some mischief along with them.

The Sons:

The two sons are Baldev (Navin Nischol) and Sameer (Shekhar Suman). Baldev is the serious and sensible son who is always seen watching the events that take place in the house with an amused smile. Sameer on the other hand is funny and witty who is always pulling everyone’s leg. Though I’m not a great fan of Shekhar Suman, I loved him in this one. Hez just amazing as Sameer and his comic timing is brilliant.

The Bahus:

Suhasini (Farida Jalal) is the wife of Baldev and Sonu (Bhavna Balsaver) is the wife of Sameer. Suhasini owns a beauty parlour and is very charming and sweet.Sonu known as Chaachi is my most favourite character. The dumb, innocent and adorable Chaachi is a writer who takes her job very seriously much to the mirth of her family members. Bhavna Balsaver steals the show from all the other prominent stars.

I love the way she calls her husband in a particular tune “Somu re..”

The Kids:

Sanju and Kirthi are teenage kids of Baldev and Suhasini, while Vishal and Aabha(I’m not sure of the name) are Sameer’s and Sonu’s children. Sanju is very cute and spends most of his time on the phone with his suspicious girlfriend Shilpa.

Everything he does ends up as a huge blunder and is always seeking advice to woo Shilpa back. The kids and their friends provide many comic situations that viewers can actually relate to.

Others:

There are various other characters who come on and off and add to the fun. Kareema the servant, the whacko assistant of Suhasini, the cute mother of Sonu with her popular “Tere mooh mein keede…”, the bespectacled Deepak a friend of Kirthi, the weirdo friend of Sanju and ofcourse who can forget KSBKBT fame Amar Upadhyay who acted as Saahil Chaachu in this comedy.

Be it the kids maintaining the budget for a month or the family trying to impress Sameer’s new client or little Vishal falling in love with his classmate, all the situations are quite believable and fun to watch.

Dekh Bhai Dekh was originally telecast in Doordarshan in 1993 and was produced by Jaya Bhachan’s production house. I was in school at that time and I remember being really happy if I could get a half-day off or a holiday on Wednesdays coz this serial used to be aired at 2:00 pm. A decade has passed but somehow the charm of the serial still remains. Amidst all EK’s trash, this sitcom stands tall and my hand automatically stops at the remote when I hear
