Books are the world for me. And I am always skeptical before watching any movie based on a book that I have read and liked. As I always disagree with the director on the interpretation of the story or selection of a character.
So naturally I was reluctant to watch this movie too! But then I decided to give it a try just for abhay Deol. I liked his Manorama & Oye Lucky a lot. And thankfully, he has hit the right chord this time too!
Now coming back to the story:
The story is very much the same as the Novel. Except for the Ending. Which is better than the original! I would ask you all to see the movie because of the end too! Kudos to Anurag Kashyap.
The portrayal of the characters:
Abhay Deol as the indecisive, Impatient, Self centered Devdas is remarkable. His facial expressions, his mannerisms speak as good as the dialogues. Mahi as Paro is also very Good. Though I feel that a little more importance should have been given to her role. Like in the original story.
Kalki as chanda the Prosti*ute is the surprise package of this movie. She looks Vulnerable. One feels the pain of the victimised school girl. her face is innocent. She looks pure and lovable. Which is a success for the director of the movie Anurag.
This movie has some 18 songs. But none of them halt the pace of the movie even once. The story moves along with the songs smoothly. This movie lacks glamour but it is thankfully replaced by excellent editing and great performances. This is a movie with a difference. So go and watch it with an open mind.
