Any time you see Jr. NTR and Koratala Siva come together on the big screens, the film is undoubtedly going to be a visual extravaganza. Devara: Part 1 is no different. As a Telugu cinema fan, stunning visuals, cinematography, and electrifying music are part and parcel of an action film. However, Devara takes it to a whole new level! I loved the emotionally charged performances and the high-octane fight scenes in grand locations. All you get is pure action and drama throughout the duration of the film. Here is my no-spoiler review:
The Plot:
The plot of the movie is simple. It might not have jaw-dropping twists or a heart-wrenching climax, but still packs a punch. Jr. NTR plays the role of Devara, as a solo lead after 6 long years. Devara is the captain of a group of pirates who are given contracts by Muruga(played by Murali Sharma). After learning that a particular contract is costing the lives of thousands of innocent people, Devara refuses to participate. However, he faces roadblocks from his partner Bhaira(played by Saif Ali Khan) who is a ruthless thug. What unfolds is a dramatic rivalry for ages to come. Apart from the main, plot we also get subplots like Devara’s son Vara who is fearful and comes with his own hidden motives. There is also a one-sided boring romantic track between Vara and Thangam(played by Janvi Kapoor).
Performances:
Jr. NTR carries the entire movie on his shoulders. Even if you are not a big fan of Telugu movies, watch this film for his acting. From emotional to stunt scenes, along with occasional light-hearted humor, everything is spot on. His dialogue delivery is perfect and the action scenes look realistic. Even Saif Ali Khan has his moments and maintains his cruel, vengeful character throughout. Other supporting actors do not stand out and just do enough to carry the story forward. Janhavi Kapoor and Chaitra Rai’s characters did not have any depth and needed better acting.
Standout Elements:
Koratala Siva as a director has already shown why he is one of the most respected filmmakers in the industry. His masterful direction with the unique skill of mixing mass elements in an intricate storyline elevates a standard script. The narrative is fast-paced even though the movie is three hours long. Another thing I will never forget about this film is the soundtrack. Anirudh Ravichanders sensational music goes with all the narratives beautifully. The songs are also energetic and soulful. The background music elevates the action scenes and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I loved the ‘Fear Song’. Gives you goosebumps.
Should You Watch It?
Devara: Part 1 is a treat for all the Telugu movie fans. Jr.NTR is at his best. His acting will definitely make it worth your time. However, the movie plot becomes too predictable and you lose interest in the second half. For such a grand setup, I expected a similar climax that would blow my mind. However, it is disappointing to see the potential wasted. They have probably saved more scenes for the second part.
All in all, it is a great one-time watch and the second part will be interesting to watch out for.
