The story is about Devdas and Paro(Shahrukh Khan and Aishwariya Rai), childhood friends who love each other.Devdas`s father sends Devdas to London for studying, for ten years.From that day Paro burns a candle for ten years.When Devdas returns after ten years, he first go to meet Paro by which his mother(Smita Jayakar)gets hurt.Devdas`s Bhabhi(Ananya Khare)takes full advantage of the situation and she poisons her mother_in_law against Paro and her mother(Kiran Kher).One day Devdas`s mother calls Paro`s mother and she tells her that they will get her daughter, Paro married.Paro`s mother thinks that they are talking about the marriage of their son, Devdas with Paro.Devdas`s mother makes Paro`s mother dance one night and tells her to dance as if she is dancing on her daughter`s wedding.So, Paro`s mother dances and at the same time she talks about Devdas`s and Paro`s marriage infront of the people.Then, Devdas`s mother insults her in the crowd and over there Paro`s mother swears that she would get Paro married in a bigger house.Devdas leaves his house and stays with his friend Chunnilal(Jackie Shroff).Chunnilal takes Devdas to Chandramukhi`s(Madhuri Dixit)kotha.When Chandramukhi sees Devdas, she falls in love with him and on the same time Paro gets married to a Thakur(Vijayendra Ghatge), who has three children, who are grown_ups.So, Paro`s husband is of her father`s age.When Devdas comes to know this he starts to drink and becomes an unhappy person.For him life is nothing but only alcohol and tears.
Direction by Sanjay Leela Bhansali is excellent.The movie is beautiful.The sets and the dresses by Neeta Lulla are excellent.While watching this film one can understand that it is a very expensive film.Prakash Kapadia`s screenplay is superb.Nitin Chandrakant`s sets are amazing.Binod Pradhan`s cinematography is eye_catching.Saroj Khan`s choreography is mind_blowing.Ismail Darbar`s music is one of the best soundtrack of the year and Nusrat badr`s lyrics are very good.the story has been based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhye`s classic novel.
And now the performances!Shahrukh Khan again gives a solid performance in this movie.No other actor could portray Devdas`s character so well as Shahrukh did.Aishwariya Rai looks like a fairy.Her acting was superb.madhuri Dixit looks gorgeous but she does not have such a meaty role even then her magic is present throughout the film.She dances very well.Jackie Shroff has been wasted and his acting was not powerful.Milind Gunaji is passable.Vijayendra Ghatge is not impressive.Smita Jayakar acts very well.Among the supporting actors Kiran Kher is the best!There`s no word to describe her.She gives a POWERFUL performance as Paro`s mother.
On the whole Devdas is a film, not to be missed.It is a classic which takes you on a beautiful journey.A MUST SEE!
