MUSIC REVIEW

’’DEVDAS’……………ecstatic…. enriching…….enthralling

Wake up music lovers! Have   a respite off your daydreams or nightmares. You are about to enter into an area of excellence. It is an era of , an aroma of, an aura of   some mesmerizing music performance.

These dream merchants from the bollywood fantasy world are dangerously and pleasantly unpredicatable. They never cease to give you a blitzkrieg of miracles. In a scenario of rom pom senseless pops and atrociously tiresome romantic zigzags the musical score of Devdas arrives with a vengeance proclaiming that wholesome , meaningful and    thinking music is here to stay …..forever.

’’Devdas’, the movie , is the creation of sensitive celebrated director Sanjay Leela Bhansali    having a penetrating ear for melodies inc. His earlier works   ’’Khamoshi’’ ( Jatin-Lalit were the sole crowdpullers) and ’’ Hum Dil De…..sanam’ (where music travelled along with the script) won accolades from the critics as well as the mainsream film buffs.

A truckload of flowers should be sent to the ace music composer Ismail Darbar ( his second attempt) and the poet lyricist Nusrat Badr for creating a memorable and enchanting music score with a touch

of class. In all sincereity, their unbeatable combination is in the league of   music directors   Gulam Mohd. ’Pakeeza’ and Laxmi Pyares ’Jal bin machali…….bijlee’. It is essentially a sumptuous mix of Naushad and Khayyam class and enthralling rhythm of L.P.

The entire album is flavoured with some beautiful singing by the celebrated artiste Kavita Subramaniam and the ’ sa re ga ma’’ finalist Shreya Ghosal . The performance of these two singers is so polished and picturesque that for once we miss less and less of

melody queen Lata Mangeshkar. Udit Narayan , like a truly original performer, repeats his excellence. The rhythm   and the powerful orchestration is the essence of the album essaying love, passion

bonding , jealousy , trials and tribulations of lovers .

The album starts with an ecstatic track ’’silsilsa ye chahat ’’ by the debuntant singer Shriya Ghosal.   This artiste has infinite possibilities to make it to the top. Embellished with surprising variations , full

marks to her for giving a memorable song worth listening hundred times. ’Maar Dala ’ sung by Kavita has all the ingredients   of making a chartbuster.   Darbar has composed a cut above the rest track.

’Kahe chod mujhe’ is down to earth a pure classical track . Beautifully composed it carries   cuckooed interludes of Madhuri Nene . It could be e xplosive on the screen. ’Chalak ’ performed by U. Narayan and

V Rathod is a chirpy no. which should go well with all classes of audience. ’’Hamesha tumko’’ a duet is the surprise packet of the lot. It is positively a sparkling score   performed with zest and expertise.

Still, the album do have some glitches. It is uni dimensional suffering severely from self indulgence. ’’ who chand jaisi ’ sung by U Narayan is a liability . the chances of deletion from the screen are pretty high. Further, ’’ Dola re dola ’ a competition track , though embellished with some racy singing by the ladies somehow loses its steam due to excessive background score and ear piercing rhythm , propelling us for an aspirin. Lastly , the theme music though composed with utmost sincereity doesn’t make inroads to our heart.

All said and done , in an era of high technology, high fashion, high finance , high science   ’Devdas’ is undoubtedly high music, a la sumptuous meals wanting   more and more of it . It is a rosy bouquet.

Gift it to someone you love.
