The Plot in Brief
The film begins with Anjali arriving late in a garden where Dev is waiting for her. He is angry with her for not turning up at the correct time. She tells him that her father has arranged him to marry a wealthy man, which leads to Dev flipping out. He expresses her love for her as he sings the song, ‘Tum Dil Ki Dhadkan Mein, ’ and tells her that he can die for her and live forever in her heart as her heartbeat.
The story moves on as Anjali insists on meeting Dev’s mother but Dev is not to keen. Eventually he agrees and takes her to his house but does not enter. Sharmila Tagore, plays the role of his mother and is sitting with her ears by the radio, listening to a melancholy song. Dev’s mother recognizes Anjali and tells her that Dev doesn’t like her because she gave birth to him as a single mother, who had not been married. She tells Anjali to always love and understand Dev. Anjali accepts.
Back home Anjali is delighted to see that her precious father had returned from a business trip but happiness doesn’t last long as she is absolutely astonished when he says that he has found a perfect man for her and has arranged the wedding. Anjali reveals to him, that she loves another person and cannot even think about being someone else’s. Her father is keen to meet his daughter’s choice.
Anjali meets Dev in the woods again, and tells him that her father has agreed to meet him and begs for him to change his clothes into something more appropriate, and to behave politely to her father to set a good example.
Dev completely ignores Anjali’s wishes and turns up in the same worn out sandals and irrespectively shows the hole in the sole of it. Anjali’s father tries to co-operate and asks what he has in life. He replies only Anjali. Her father is not impressed. Dev is then asked that if he is not granted Anjali’s hand what would he do? Dev replies I will snatch her away and marry her. Furious at Dev, Anjali’s father throws him out of the house. Sacrificing her love Anjali decides to listen to her dear parents and calls off the relationship with Dev. Hurt, he tells Anjali he will destroy the man she is going to marry but Anjali tells him that the friendship between them shouldn’t lead to that. He is hurt and goes to his mother who too, is shocked and suffers a heart attack, which kills her. The audience is left feeling sorry for Dev as he loses everything in his life. Even the mother, who he never tried to be understand.
Anjali is married to Ram (Akshay Kumar) as the song ‘Dulhe Ka Suhra, ’ is playing to express the hurt feelings of the bride and to create a melancholy atmosphere as two lovers part.
Ram’s family who are later revealed to be his step, try whatever they can to hurt Anjali as they want to get a larger share of the business company and make sure Ram has nothing. After trying to avoid the kindness and love of Ram, Anjali finds herself that she cannot resist and ends up in love with him.
Then at the 3rd anniversary of Anjali and Ram’s wedding, a guest, Mrs. Malhotra invites a special guest from London… Dev. Anjali is shocked to see him as he now is wearing rich clothes and has become a successful businessman. Anjali is trapped between her past and present. What will happen? The twist in the story grips the viewer as they eagerly await the ending.
The Performances
Sunil Shetty delivers a splendid performance with his aggressive and obsessive attitude towards the love of Anjali. He not only suits the role but shows that he is a good actor, Negative or Positive.
Shilpa Shetty also acts well with her emotional scenes. She portrays the feelings of the character very well as if she is a natural actor. She looks amazing and mature as a wife and also delivers her lines effectively.
Akshay Kumar looks like a normal, fun-loving husband and he too works his best at this film. Although many people may find it different because he is an action hero, nevertheless his chemistry on screen as a patient husband works.
The Music
Nadeem-Shravan have again produced music that is popular and will be remembered throughout generations. The music does flow with the movie as it booms the emotions of the film.
