Puttu can be considered the state breakfast dish of Kerala. Nowadays puttu has evolved from just being a breakfast staple. Dhe puttu in edappally Kochi is a restaurant that celebrates this. The variety of puttu they offer is beyond the imagination of even a foodie.
Puttu is basically steamed rice flour added with grated coconut for flavor. Basic variation comes in the container in which the mixture is steamed. It was either bamboo stem which gave it cylindrical shape or coconut shell, that was in the shape of a hemisphere and called chiratta puttu. Then variation came in the form of cereal, rice was replaced with wheat, raagi, oats etc.
When it comes to the restaurant menu the variety doesnt end there, the menu includes the commonly seen irachi(meat) puttu, kappa(tapioca) puttu, to even biriyani puttu and chocolate puttu. There are atleast 20 varities of puttu on the menu and apart from this there are daily specials all throughout the year.
There are number of side dishes to accompany the varity in puttu, the most common kadala( black chick pea) curry and cheru payar(green gram) to a variety of curries both veg and non veg. Here too there are menu regulars and daily specials. For a restaurant that focuses only on a single item the menu is vast and you will take a lot of time to decide what to order. For those still confused there are mixed platters on offer.
Apart from puttu and curries there are also desserts and beverages, but there isnt much variety. One worth mentioning is the sulaimani( variety of black tea).
Apart from the great food the ambiance is also really good and the service offered is good. The restaurant is easily accessible, 1 km from lulu mall, on the ernakulam nh bypass.
Overall this a must restaurant to visit for any foodie visiting kochi.
