Dhoom 2 - Watch It Once...

I know I am going to get a lot of hate mail and ratings for my review. But then that is precisely what I thought about sending Aditya Chopra and Sanjay Gadhvi. I mean how long can the Chopras go on considering that the Indian movie audience is such a mindless group which can see any kind of movie.

In this season of sequels, Dhoom 2 is the last one to be released, I think from what I have read in the various websites and film mags. Dhoom 1 was also a no-brainer with no significant plot, but was stacked with a lot of sexy babes and bikes, plus John and Abhishek. No one can deny that this movie recreated the going-down careers of Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham, Esha Deol, Rimii Sen and music composer Pritam. What this movie also did was to make names like Hayabusa a known word in the common man’s lingo.

Now coming to Dhoom-2 or D-2 as they makers want us to call it. It has lots of style and glamor, but no substance. Though there is a lot of hype, the movie does little to justify all that.

Abhishek and Uday (now in the police) are in charge of trapping Hrithik who is a renowned thief, world class and stylish. He is a master of gadgets, making new ones for each mission. Assisting A & U in this task is Bipasha Basu (thoroughly wasted in 5 scenes and 1 song). She appears later as the movie moves to Brazil, appearing as the earlier Bipasha’s twin sister and gets one more song to sing. A’s wife Rimii Sen is shown as pregnant and so does not have much to do in the movie, appearing in abt 2-3 scenes and then conveniently disappearing.

Hrithik’s counterpart in the entire crime scene is Ash, who is actually a police plant. She makes him fall for her and though they look good, not many sparks fly. Even the much hyped kiss between them is so drably done that the newspaper reports about Abhishek creating a scene about it seems far fetched.

The movie moves around in Namibia, Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro, Fiji, etc there by giving the producers and the cinematographers and lot of chance to add glamour to the scenes. Some of the scenes are well shot, but more than Hrithik’s guile, it is the cops’ stupidity that helps him in stealing. The cops are shown as so dumb that Mumbai police should arrest Sanjay Gadhvi for showing them like this. The ending is also a rather tame affair, much like D-1.

Hrithik makes his mark as the bad man, but then he is the only person who has got some role. He adds style and glitz to his entire role, moving around faster than the cops in various disguises. His body movements, whether it be action or the dance scenes, are straight “A” mark, really.

Every major reviewer in print and TV has been harping about how Ash has become sexy and glamorous. But excuse me; she fails miserably in this act. She puts on so much effort to look hot that it shows on her face. Acting and dialog delivery were never her strong points and so she lives up to it. ;-) Someone like Sushmita would have done more justice to this role. Maybe someone told her that using “like” in every sentence is hot, but no ma’m that is just not done.

Abhishek is serviceable, but then he pales in front of an “A” class Hrithik. He just tries to do what Papa did in Sholay, play the no-nonsense guy, with no success whatsoever.

Bipasha is thoroughly wasted and there appears to be no logic which convinced her to appear in this movie. 6 scenes and 2 songs should not have been the reason, I think.

Uday has got some real funny lines, but then if only he could act. He says the lines well, but …

Music is a pale copy of D-1, with only “Crazy kiya re” and the opening track “Dhoom Again” attractive. Cinematography is good and so are the action scenes handled by Allan Amin.

All in all, a once watchable movie with not many things going in its favor. But then, the movie might earn more than D-1 considering the hype that it has about it.
