Dhoooom ! What a let-down, Definately expected more from the promos & trailers. But it was Ok not that bad not that superb.
Not to mention the Silver matt brushed metallic Dhoom look taken from the Fast & The Furious and Biker Boys. (Im a graphic designer I notice these things!)
Well for a first time to focus on testosterone-packed drama, Yash Raj films does a good job (good not great!)
The press kit for this movie was designed very creatively in a circular layout symbolizing a bike speedometer, the kit signifies speed and details the character sketch and storyline of the film.
Its all the Hype, you expect Bollywoods answer to Torque but you are disappointed when you see the action is not even 20% of what you had expected. The Theme song and the Theme music itself add to the Hype.
With Hollywood coming up with Biker boys and Torque, Bollywood is not far behind to show off its Bike-life in Mumbai. The story is Fast and the furious concept of Speed and crime weaved into Biker boys and Torque.
What Sanjay Gadhvi failed miserably to do was project bike stunts. I read some professional bikers were brought to perfom some bike stunts, though there were none except wheelies and going in circles.( Uday wins the race on the back wheel- Wow or how ?)
Whats this movie about- Bike and chicks. (well almost)
What happened? why didnt this movie do THAT well? I think its the director who didnt have the John Woo action visuals, he was unable to have such a fast paced movie on bikes shown in its actual required speed.
The Director Sanjay Gadhvi previously directed Mere Yaar ki shaadi for Yash Raj Films. Usually Yash Raj films cast Jimmy Shergil, this time they decided to go for John Abraham.
Before that he directed Tere Liye in 2000... Arjun Punj, Hiten Paintal, AanshThakkar, Sonali Khare, Shilpa Satlani, Bhavna Pani, anyone heard of these ppl?
or this movie?
The use of computer graphics (for almost 25 minutes of the film) lends Dhoom is supposed to add a more realistic touch.
THE STORY
4 professional riders are professional thieves who make clean get aways and leave the police clueless. The team of theives is led by Kabir (John Araham) who sports a Suzuki Hayabusa 1300 cc bike. Robbers by night, they are plain innocent pizza deliver boys by day.
Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) is the new ACP in town whos first case is the Bike gang robbery, he needs riders to catch them, so he comes across Ali (Uday) who is a mechanic and forcibly made to assist on this case.
Abishek is married to Rimi and they dont go together, they have no chemistry together.
When one of the gang members is a shot, Kabirs cover is blown and the cops know who he is. Kabir likes to takes risks but doesnt look for trouble so he moves to Goa with his team recruiting a new member Ali (Uday) who joins the team to replace one member and acts as a spy forAbishek.
Kabir plans his last mega-robbery -- a loaded casino in Goa on New Years Eve. Some 150 people on the dance floor in Salame song and the Casino show a similar figure.................... in Goa on New Years theres no place for ants....
The heavily guarded safe with 18 crores is created by a highly professional company from Israel... so breaking into the lock is impossible.
When you see the entrance to the safe it reminds you of Oceans eleven. However Kabir is smarter than the Israel company, he breaks into the safe from the
ceiling. Arent such safes to be made in concrete from all six sides and walls ?
THE CAST
ABISHEK- Jai
He plays a serious guy, though he shares some comedy with Uday he still maintains his angry young man look.
Abishek seriously need to start working out and put on some muscles to be make believe he can take on 5-10 ppl at one time.
Abishek is definately improving as an actor just need to improve his look.
Ali (Uday Chopra), a happy-go-lucky garage mechanic and a well known bike rider in the city. Ali and Abishek reminded me of Anil Kapoor with Jackie Shroff in Andar Bahar, though Anil was funnier. Alis wardrobe is terrible and his hair is worse.
This role was easy for Uday coz he cant act and here he just had to play stupid (didnt have to practice hard)
His comedy is good and bearable and so far compared to his earlier roles- you will like him.
Kabir (John Abraham) fits the role.
A professonial thief who is extremely careful to even buy luxury for himself from the stolen money to be caught.
John looks like a biker and a bad guy, his acting, his attitude, his confidence is done well. His acting is the best among everyone.
Esha (called Dilbara by Uday)
Esha enters with a song dancing in the rain and later in Goa appears on a jet ski in a Bikini- looks better and slimmer than before. Esha is going for the exposing tactic thinking it might boost her career.
She is one of the team of robbers but is there for nothing, doesnt really make an impact.
Her appearance has improved, now its her dancing skills, acting and please............ wardrobe !
Mama Hema has taken the matter in her own hands and is going to make a movie for Esha....... hope she realizes that sibling is the worst dressed female in the industry.
Rimi Sen (Sweety)
Not too many dialogues given to her, she complains in Bengali... and sounds saying it.... though I didnt understand a word!!
Rimi Sen looks more sexier than Esha, but shes just a bimbo in the movie.
WHAT WENT WRONG?
Jai doesnt have a bike, when we saw the promos we thought he would.
Action move with speed but too slow.
Kabir turns around and throws his helmet and the police car over turnd and then flies 90 degrees up ! (RDX packed helmet?)
THE ACTION
Well done action scenes, with a little help of a great camera angles they could have has 360 degree shots and zoom ins to make it look faster, or
possibly the slow motion and then immediately fast. These effects support an action scence.
Fight scenes are none worth mentioning.
Some cameras must have been attached to the bikes to film at actual accelerated speeds.
SONGS/ MUSIC
The film is packed with some music by Pritam.
The background score is given by Salim-Sulaiman who also gave the score for Ram Gopal Vermas Bhoot.
Shikdum- Is the opening song and not 10 seconds of the movie go by and this song is up. Somehow, it just doesnt belong here, the beats and stuff youd expect it in a Disco or a college campus not a bedroom thing between Husband and wife, something more melodious or slower would add to the situation.
Theres a re-mixed version of this too.
Dhoom Machale- The theme song of the movie is a great song, doing extremely well on FM-requests all over and the remix version of this with Tata Young is wicked music too !
Dilbara- Live stage performance of Esha in front of a crowd in the worst of outfits and terribly choreographed number (or its it just Esha)
Salaame- Last song of the movie. Salsa Al la spanish type thing in the Goa Hotel with Abishek-Rima Sen, Esha- Ali.
