DIGIT - a must read for tech enthusiasts

Are u interested in technology? Do u want to buy any electronics gadget and want a review prior purchase? Do u care for the latest news, happenings and trends about technology all over the world? Are u stuck with a problem in your PC and want a solution? Do u need some essential software or any Linux distro? Then Digit is there for u.

This magazine is published monthly by Nine Dot Nine Interactive Media Pvt. Ltd. and it is distributed throughout the country. Its headquarters is in Mumbai. Once it was just only a Computer Magazine but gradually evolved as a Tech Mag. It is being published for many years and it is by far the most popular tech magazine in India.

I have been purchasing this mag for nearly 7-8 years at least. There was another mag called CHIP which I used to buy too. But recently their publication has stopped all in a sudden and I am unable to find any issues of it in magazine stalls for past 6-7 months. Anyway, Digit is being published uninterruptedly for many years and it is a very good magazine with 120-122 pages covering many aspects of technology.

Design:

Whenever u hold any issue of Digit u will surely notice that this magazine is very colorful. The quality of pages is good. Every image or pics used alongside an article is colored. The fonts used in the mag has nice readability. The Graphics Designing Team do a good work. Overall the look and feel is pretty modern and sleek.

Contents:

Digit is all about technology. Digit covers a wide range of technical subjects. I will try to touch the variety of subjects they publish in their mag like -

Cover Story: There is certainly a cover story which is the main thrust area of that particular issue. The subject obviously varies with every issue. It may be the current technology used in various sports, or can be a brief insight of our space research, or about the recent research trends on robotics, or can be a simple buying guide of various electronics gadgets. Anyway, most of the articles in the cover story are interesting.

Readers’ Section: They encourage to write to them and they publish some of the letters from readers in this column. They also give reply to each of the published letters. They listen to your complaints, suggestions, problems, queries etc. Digit Team try their very best to come up with a solution of each and every problem u face, be it technical or non-technical.

Tips & Tricks: This is a very useful part for us. They provide many tips on different software, operating systems, Mobile OS, or any product etc. This section is my favorite.

Product Review: This is a dedicated section where they review some recent products. U can find reviews on Branded Desktop PCs, laptops, printers, digital cameras, graphics cards, mobile phones, processors, lan cards, some software and so on. They also rate the product on 100 point scale.

There is another type of review section on a particular product category. For example, they may take some Inkjet Printers(in a specific price range) from the manufacturers like HP, Canon, Brother, Epson etc and test them in their Test Lab and make a comparison on various aspects with a rating system. These reviews are extensive which cover much more detailing and they help a lot.

Buying Guide: They also publish a list of current prices of various gadgets or equipments like Processors, RAMs, Graphics Cards, Digital Cameras, Laptops etc. which will help u to get a rough idea about the prevailing prices.

For people who want to assemble a a desktop PC, there is a section(in1 page) where they virtually build some Entry Level, Mid Range, High Range desktops with latest configuration giving the price details of each component.

Global News: Recent developments in technology and some of the latest news are published in a separate section which are very informative.

DIY: This is the’Do It Yourself’ section. They teach u how to build/make/do something in some easy and simple steps.

Troubleshooting: If u are facing some problems with your pc, laptop, or digicam or any electronic equipment, be it software or hardware issue, u can write to them.they may come up with a real good solution and publish it in this section(ofcourse there is a chance that your issue is not being addressed and published at all and it is quite understandable as they receive many letters every day from their readers).

There are some other sections too where they publish interviews of some eminent persons in the field of technology, a few lines about some books or movies etc. And there is a Digit Diary of course which is a fun to read. Who r the members of the Digit Team and what they do apart from their job? Read it here. Digit also brings up the developmental works going on in rural part of our country with the help of various technology. Many people in our country are doing praiseworthy works in the tech field individually or collectively.Digit also talks about them.

Extra Goodies:

Apart from the main mag, Digit also provides us something extra. It has two supplementary sub-mags: one is called ’dgt’ for digital lifestyle and trends and the other is the ’Fast Track’ which is a small booklet discussing one particular subject in details. Here also they cover various subjects of tech.like a deep understanding on a specific Linux distribution, or some programing with codes for potential web developers etc and many more.

The list does not end here. Digit also gives us 2 DVDs i.e. Alpha and Omega with each edition. These DVDs contain some useful third party software for Windows, Macintosh, Android OS etc. Some Device Drivers are also being provided. U can also find trailers of some upcoming hollywood movies, some E-Books, some Linux Distros, wallpapers etc. in the DVDs.

There are a few downsides too. Firstly, the packaging of the magazine is not good always. U may find some scratches in the bundled DVDs, some may even refuse to start when u put them in dvd drive. Secondly, the price gradually has become much higher(it is Rs. 200/- for normal editions and Rs 250/- for Special or Anniversary editions). Thirdly, the quality of pages in the Fast Track booklet is inferior.

Digit has its own website which is also very good and informative. U can visit https://digit.in if u wish and u can also subscribe it from there. Subscribers get some discounts often. If u have a passion for technology and cant live without it, u can grab a copy of Digit and see if it suits you.i feel it surely will.
