I usually watch movies in the first week of their release and I had planned on seeing Dil Bole Hadippa because the promos seemed promising. It was supposed to be Ranis "comeback" after all the weight-loss(It was not as drastic as Kareenas weight-loss, thankfully, but Rani / Satya - her trainer, could have done a little better.) and Shahid’s first release after the very successful Kaminey. Shahid has always been a good – sometimes bad actor but post Jab We Met, he has definitely ‘made his place’. In Dil Bole Hadippa, he is more like a supporting actor the way he was in Jab We Met with a very strong female protagonist but he leaves an impact, he supports well. DBH is a woman’s movie. It reminds you of Chak De for sure.
Anupam Kher(from Amritsar) and Dalip Tahil(from Lahore) are buddies and have their respective cricket teams Indian Tigers and Pakistani Champs which play against each other to win the trophy - “Aman Cup”. Rani plays Veera who’s sole passion in life is Cricket and she plays outstandingly well, she has big dreams – she wants to open for the Indian cricket team. Indian Tigers have been losing for years together and there seems to be no hope for them until someone very talented captains and coaches them. Kher calls his son Rohan(Shahid) who is a superb cricketer himself in England. Rohan agrees and decided to revamp the entire team, he starts the selections for the next Aman Cup. Veera cannot play, her sex comes in the way! So she decides to get a makeover and becomes Veer with a Harbhajan-ish look. Now, the fun starts. Rani plays both Veer and Veera and there are many funny moments. Rani is adorable as Veer. Irritating as Veera. I was particularly irritated with the kind of dresses she wore and it was a relief to see her as a boy later in the movie. She is much better as a comedienne than a glamorous actress.
This movie has all that a Hindi movie buff asks for – Love, foor tapping music, scenic locales of Punjab, good choreography, 2 bombshells(minus Rani) and a story with a couple of important messages.
The music is very Tashan-ish with weird lyrics and song titles like Bhangra Bistar and Disco wale Khisko. Very timepass. Forgettable but enjoyable for the first time.
Watch this movie for Rani. It’s not bad at all.
