Once in a while there comes a movie or a book (or ... okay .... a tv serial ... if u must!) which forces you to think that hey ... I can connect to this!!!
DCH was one of such movies ... most of us who have been amongst good friends can vouch for it.. believe me .. I actually felt like watching the movie again .. and yet again .. with my friends .. so that I could enjoy it even more..
Setting:
Rarely in Hindi Cinema .. do you get across a mainstream movie that speaks of emotions other than love ... okay lately there has been an occasional Border you may say but then .. there arent many you can think of. DCH would be ranked more as a Friendship movie than of a Love movie. And a beautiful work of it.
Casting:
Just imagine the real chemistry between the three friends - Aamir, Akshaye & Saif .. can you think of a better casting for this movie .. even the irrepressible SRK wont fit the bill here .. Aamir was perfect in his cool dude role, Saif was defining in his Loverboy avtar ... Akshaye was a subtle hint of maturity - defined strongly by his interest in the ageless Dimple.
Music:
The beats of koi kahe kehta rahe.., Dil Chahta Hai.. and the haunting melody of Tanhaee.. - both in the same movie!! Imagine .. you could not even sense a bump while the movie moves from its title track to the sad-but-so-real Tanhaee. The transition from one phase of life to the other was so smooth! And the music never sounded boring or out-of-the-blue ... infact no sane person could even go out-to-the-loo .. which normally is the routine with a hindi movie goer in a theater!
Dialogues:
Remember the simple words Saif blurts out when Amir & Akshaye come to see him after his misadventure in Goa ... tumhein kya lagta hai .. main roz is takiye par baith-ta hoon..? Or the setting in the underground Metro station when Amir comes back to pick Preity and there is a goon like figure in close vicinity.. Oh God .. I hope you are okay.. she (Preity) didnt do anything wrong to you.. .. isnt that something totally different and unheard of -- in Hindi cinema ... REAL HUMOR rather than slapstick ugly comedy?
Direction:
Director as they say is the captain of his ship.
Farhan Akhtar actually did himself a little disservice by bringing to us this film as his first - a real high standard to reach upto .. he could not match those standards in his later flick(s) ...
All in all... a new genre was given to hindi cinema .. that of light, real, youthful, identifiable movies.
