Plain blasphemy

Dil hai tumhara

Five days of holiday, thanx to Diwali. Here’s hoping all of you had a bright, glorious, funfilled diwali and wishing all of you prosperity ahead.

I took a break and decided to relax with a movie. Strolled up to the cd center only to realize something I had forgotten. The holidays herald the rentals of all the movies in town and I was left with minimal options to choose from.

I settled with the much hyped movie ‘dil hai tumhara’ here’s a little something about the movie

Director: Kundan Shah

Producer: Kumar S Taurani

Music: Nadeem Shravan

Cast: Preity Zinta, Mahima Chaudhri, Jimmy Shergil, Arjun Rampal, Rekha

Coming from the director of the movie ‘Kya Kehna’, I was expecting yet another sensible movie. To add to it there was all the hyped publicity, numerous interviews and promos of the movie that had quite drawn my attention. Well, those are meant to do that and I must say, they had quite accomplished it.

The movie and begins with Rekha in her hay days, all young and energetic. She is having this picture perfect married life with her hubby and daughter until one evening, when all hell let lose. She unearths her husband’s extramarital relationship, and just as her marriage is on the rocks, her husband and his lover die in an accident(almighty’s judgement!)

She is thus forced to take the responsibility of the upbringing of her husband’s other wife’s daughter. Quite obviously and evidently, she loves her own daughter nimmi(mahima) over the other daughter Shalu(preity). The two daughters however love each other as siblings. Nimmi is a very feminine sensitive, thoughtful girl. Shalu on the other hand is tomboyish, outspoken, audacious, jovial and overconfidant.nevertheless both are cosseted.

Sameer(jimmy) is shalu’s childhood playmate and a ventriloquist.

Then walks in the handsome industrialist’s son Dev khanna (arjun rampal) and sweeps both the ladies off their feet. He falls in love with shalu after the initial skirmishes. Nimmi has lost her heart, mind and soul over him. Rekha wants nimmi and Dev to tie the knot and sees shalu’s love as a move of arrogance. She disowns shalu and comes up with the whole concept of her blood being contaminated, recalling her mother’s decadence (forgetting her husband was in it too) as she was someone else’s daughter (realization after 20 odd yrs!).

Each of them then take their turn at making the best and greatest sacrifice for each other.(as if it were a competion!)

The pace of the story is too variant. To many things happening all at once in the beginning. The first half is too fast and the latter half is too slow.a hotch potch of too many ideas. Rekha outrightly hates shalu and is chiding her at some instances and is all overflowing with love sometimes. rekha’s mayor post and people wanting to covet that, a sick unit at palampur owned by industrialist khanna (alok nath) and people wanting to covet that factory, a handsome graduate unearthing the misdeeds of a few disloyal employees in his factory, all amid the two sisters falling in love, a ventriloquist in the middle advertising for a newly launched drink by Dev and then the usual qurbani, meherbani are all to boring to handle at once.

It gets too melodramatic unnecessary and does not gain momentum. The plot is not tight. Intricacies of relationships are dealt with very badly. It is just a showcase of the daughter step mom relation. Otherwise, both the gals like the same guy and both the guys like the same girl.(love quadrilateral!)

Performance wise the queen Rekha lets her fans down by being somber and vapid. The two guys do nothing but look good. preity overdoes her part and mahima underplays.

Music: the one relief feature of the movie. Songs are catchy and melodious. The lyrics too linger in your mind for a while.

So if you are among those who haven’t watched this movie, you are sensible.
