Well DVPV was another of the excessively overrated magnum opus diwali release in bollywood.it has a huge star cast composing mainly of a lot of new entrants, yet to make a niche for themselves in bollywood.
Well there’s
Madhavan (krish) who has become the uncrowned raja, down south in the Tamil movie scene.
Jimmy shergil (hritik) who just about got away with his charming looks in mere yaar ki shaddi hain, dil hain tumhara and not forgetting mohabbatein, when others stole the show.
Hrishita bhatt (jojo) who has established herself as a model ever since the iit Powai fest ‘mood indigo’ and did display her talent in Ashoka.
Rakesh Bapat who is too cute to act seems to be getting only shrunk roles. remember Tum bin? They killed him midway there and here they‘ve crippled him mentally.
Sanjay Suri (dev): the cute Nescafe new neighbour and the Mr. good from filhaal
Sonali Kulkarni was of course a pleasure to watch. She is the one with remarkable performances to her credit from mission Kashmir and pyaar tune kya kiya to agnivarsha and Namrata shirodkar (raksha) our own miss India hasn’t had a hit release for quite sometime now.
The plot(s):
One mega singing competion, three love stories, eight lives entwined in it is all what DVPV is about. The contest is in pursuit of ‘the voice of the nation’ or singer of the nation and the winner gets Rs500, 000 and the opportunity to cut an album of his own.
Sanjay, jimmy and maddy are the three contenders for the prize, all for their own different reasons. The story then takes us back to how it all started.
Jimmy is an industrialist’s boy who has done everything under the aegis of his father and pretty much nothing else. Until of course he spots one pretty face in a local train. He discovers his passion for this simple girl hrishita and has to prove to her that he can stand on his feet without the eponym.
Maddy and namrata are happily married. They are both singers trying their luck singing at parties and restaurants. Namrata hits a jackpot when a music company picks her from the restaurant and makes her a singing sensation which turns out as a clout to maddy. Maddy embolds her at first and eventually moves from happy and proud to bitter and embittered. (heard of AB and JB’s abhiman!)
Sanjay is a widower who moves into town with sister bhavana. he falls in love with neighbour sonali. Sonali has a sibling, rakesh. Rakesh lost his love(riya sen) in an accident and came to believe that he could not move. So basically was crippled mentally and abstained from any physical movement. He is reduced to a wheelchair, never spoke, cried a lot and played the violin basically withdrew from society. Evidently bhavana is lured to this chap.
So, jimmy has to sing his heart out to testify he can support his love and fend along, maddy has to sing to get namrata back and prove his undying love and sanjay has to sing for sonali and for rakesh.
That’s about it. I can tell no more. To find out who won exactly, go watch the movie. Well as you know it is a Hindi movie and everyone wins. You have all sorts of sacrifices and catharsis. At the end of it unimaginable deeds and miracles happen that will leave you saying ’oh what the hell’.
Performance wise: madhavan and mamrata get full points. So do sanjay and sonali. Jimmy’s effortless wit comes in handy sometime. Others like asrani, gulshan grover and kiron kapoor add to the glory.
overall a musical entertainer but with too many things happening and all culminating into something too predictable. The idea of a man unable to absorb his spouse’s success is portrayed excellently. I have myself always wondered why famous men’s wives never seem to have that problem. Rakesh deciding to wake up and sing towards the end is unacceptable and somewhat ridiculous. Nice attempt by a debutant director. Although it does not stand upto our expectations.
Music: simply outstanding. even till today the aura of R D Burman is impeccable. Lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri are simply mindblowing. Babloo Chakraborty has recreated the music and literally given a new life to those classics. A huge line up of singers consisting of Hariharan, Kumar Sanu, Abhiijeet, Shann, Kavita Krishnamurthy and Sunidhi Chauhan.
The music is a really welcome version of old timeless classics. There is a song for every occasion, every mood and every person. It something that I recommend everyone must possess. I’ve got mine. What about you?
