My two months with Tata BB/Dishnet DSL

I read a lot of bad reviews about Dishnet DSL. My experience has been a bit different so far.

Cost:

I took my connection in chennai and paid Rs. 8630. I was promised that the connection would be laid out in a weeks time. The monthly charges is Rs.995 PM.

Bandwidth and Limit

The bandwidth given is 512 Kbps and for the above rental per month, you get 400 MB free. If you exceed that limit, Rs.15 is charged for every 10 MB excess.

Installation:

I was quite busy and told them so. The cable was laid in 2 days. Then came the part about installation. I told them I was quite savvy and can do the installation myself. But they insisted that some things needs to be configured. So I let them do it. They tried to come out to my place twice. Since I was busy, I could not be there for installation.

So I called them up and told them that I would be available only after 11:00 PM and before 8:00 AM in any day for another 2 weeks. They set things up and said that someone would come to my place after 10 if it was ok for me. Mind you they don’t work after 8 pm and yet they offered to do this. Somehow I made arrangements for 9 pm the same day and the engineer was prompt and came at 9:15, finished installation at 9:30 pm. Its been quite fun after that.

Speed:

The promised speed was 512 KBps. Be realistic. Everyone knows it is not possible to get that speed atleast now in India. I checked with some speed meters and found the speed ranging from 250 to 350 kbps. Not bad for indian conditions.

Service:

I had a problem once when the link was down. I called the customer care and told them so. I was assured it would be rectified within 2 hours. They called me after around 2.5 hours and asked whether the connection was fine. They explained that it was some kind of cable fault and that it had been rectified. Sure enough the connection was working fine.

Conclusion:

I do not know whether it is the same everywhere, but my experience with dishnet dsl(or should I say Tata BB) has been pleasant so far. I am not sure if this is because Tata has taken over the service. Overall I would recommend Tata BB to anyone based on my experience now with them for the past 2 months.
