ALMOST Divine!

One day, not so long ago, I was channel surfing ... and my remote control ’died’. Well, I started watching this movie from the very beginning (unusual for me, hah) and didn’t bother looking for new batteries because of the impressive cast. ’Divine Secrets’ IS a ’chick flick’, so don’t expect your boyfriend/husband to stay glued to the TV. The storyline is as old as humankind itself - women’s relationships with one other and within themselves. It’s about 4 ’older women’ (who have laughed together, cried together, gotten drunk together, and dissed one another) and a daughter (Sandra Bullock) whose relationship with Mama (Ellen Burstyn) isn’t a good one because of faulty memories, bad judgment, and the human failure to hear and listen. Burstyn’s buddies ’kidnap’ Sandra - and tell her about Burstyn’s ’story’ the way it really ’was’ - because they want to see Mom and daughter ’reconcile’. Sandra’s long-suffering fiance (Angus MacFadyen) and Burstyn’s long-suffering husband (James Garner) play small but significant roles. Yes, the secrets revealed WILL bring tears to your eyes because ... most of us have experienced similar mother-daughter misery, anger, love, and deliberate or unconscious failure to remember the ’good’ in our parents and children. And yes, in the end, all’s well that ends well. The actors are marvelous - and we really DO like them - but the southern accents seem contrived. The movie itself is ALMOST divine - but not divine enough to watch a second time.
