This is a brilliant work of fiction by the master of details. It is fast paced and keeps the reader interested throughout the length of the narrative. It is the story of a group of mercenaries who take up a job of dethroning the government of a small African country. The group has its leader the inimitable C.A.T. Shannon, the main character in the plot, and who has led this group suceessfully in the past.
As a reader I sometimes have felt that some of the Forsyth`s books get lost in the details, for example "The Negotiator". There is just way too much detailing in that book. I sometimes felt the pace of the narrative gets a bit sluggish by unnecessarily delving into too much detail. However, again that might just be my humble opinion!
However, be assured, "Dogs of War" is nothing like that! In that way it is more like his first book. "The Day of the Jackal", which I believe is the best book that Forsyth has written in his career. It has the right balance of a quick paced plot, interesting twists and turns, an accurate and very detailed description of events that might serve as a fitting tutorial for a budding mercenary
