This is the third book of Fredrick Forsyth which I read. Again he was able to enthrall me with his witty, well researched, descriptive and thrilling novel. ”Dogs of war” this title is derived from the Shakespeare’s novel Julius Caesar, ” Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war! This is a story of a mercenary named Carlo Alfred Thomas Shannon or Cat Shannon. Before reading the novel I never knew that there are things called mercenaries who were hired by governments and private organisations to wage war in Africa or other least developed nations.Story starts with Cat Shannon leaving Africa with his fellow mercenaries after failed mission. Then comes into picture Sir James Manson who owns Mansion Consilidated or ManCon a big minning company. He comes to know of a vast deposit of Platinum in an interior part of Africa called Zangaro. After this he makes a big plan to grab the deal. The deposit of Platinum is worth 10 billion dollars. Zangaro is ruled by dictator named President Kimba who rules with the help of Russian KGB. He knew that KGB will play a spoilsport if they come to know bout these platinum deposits. So he decides to launch a Military Coup in Zangaro to grab power and install a dummy president who will do as he will say. James Mansion hires mercenary Cat Shannon after great deal of research on Zangaro republic and other mercenaries. He was given task to launch a mercenary attack. Then starts the detailed preparation of Shannon to launch attack. The day decided was Republic day of Zangaro. Fredrick forsyth has given the vivid description of preparation in obtaining Ammunition, men, ships etc for attack. In the whole novel you keep wondering what will happen next. Then in between is the epoisode of romance between Cat Shannon and daughter of Sir James Mansion, his encounter with other mercenary Roux etc.The story is very beautifully written and also informative about the way ammuniton black market works in different countries. Best part of the whole novel is its ending. Like his other novels the end twists the whole plot and is enough to amaze reader about its beauty. It is said that Fredrick Forsyth has used his experience of Biafran war between Nigeria and Biafra in this novel. Description of Africa is too meticulate. Also its said that Fredrick Forsyth in order to do deep research, himself pretended to launch a coup in real life. A film was made based on the novel in the same name in year 1980.
