OK, here I am again ... Seems my first (and ONLY) review was not exactly up to par, so ... Ill try again! Although Travolta has done some damn good work in the past, this movie is NOT one of his best. The storyline is interesting - you know, mom and dad are amicably divorced, mom gets married, gets pregnant, kid doesnt trust moms new hubby .. and things just seem to get worse. OK, been there, done that. Well, yes ... there are some well-executed scenes (for example, how and where the first victim meets the proverbial end), and yes, photography is ok at times... YET ... there is something missing here. Maybe - lack of emotional involvement by the actors? Travolta and step-dad square off in a rather simplistic manner. Mom, of course, swears that her new hubby is A-OK, and yells at Travolta. Big deal. Ive heard more realistic yelling at the local grocery store. Only Dad believes the kid. Cops shrug their shoulders, Travoltas new girlfriend gets pissed-off because #1 son is more important than she is ... and there stands Johnny Boy - strong, dressed in black, and only one standard deviation above the IQ of the idiot he portrayed in Saturday Night Fever. What a shame. Hes done such good work - like Phenomenon and Pulp Fiction. The kid, Matthew OLeary, seems like he wants out of the movie. The BAAAD stepdad, Vince Vaughn, talks like a robot. Shame on mom, Teri Polo, for her portrayal of a weak mommy. Twenty thumps on the head of Steve Buscemi for getting killed-off so early in the movie, and for agreeing to have his name on the cast list. At any rate, this movie lacks SINCERITY, etc., but most of all, it lacks the emotional investment of Travolta. Thumbs DOWN. Watch it when youre bored and theres nothing else on TV.
