I believe there are two sets of people going to watch the movie.
The one with the mindset that DON is a remake and the others who believe that DON is a movie in entirety.
So make up your mind before you go for the movie. My review below talks about DON as movie on its own and I have made conscious effort not to compare the old and the new
The plot is set up in beautiful scenic of Malaysia. Farhan Akhtar manages to capture the beautiful landscapes .The cinematography is worth a mention.
Mr SRK aka DON being the head of a certain drug trafficking gang
Although SRK has been portrayed as the suave bad guy.He fails to creat the fear. His enthusiasm is infectious..You can see the extra efforts he is trying to put in , to make people hate him.SRK thas tried very hard to keep the expressions, ....and YES you hate him for that.Although someone please tell that pouting doesnt qualify anyone as Cold.
His business tactics enforce him to murder an accomplice whose fiancee , enter Kareena Kapoor and sister Priyanka Chopra attack in vengeance . Hmm.......I dont know who is to blamed the coreographer or the director.Kareena leaves a huge impression on the screen ...literallly but the song is catchy and foot-tapping .Her attempt however fails" Kyoonki ki Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi namumkin hai".Priyanka, as usual does her role of looking good in the movie and looks extremely fit.
While Mr Don is having a gala time popping balls in the golf course and the hitting on unknown nymphs the moral police ... is loosing sleep over the impossible task of catching Mr DON and saving the bacchas and theirs behnas from the scum of the drugs his gang provides
The principal people trying to catch Mr Don being, Boman Irani and his team of people. We are so useful to seeing Mr goody guy that we fail to envisage his role as a police officer who ,
can caryy off the action scenes with panache..sadly he is lacking it.
Boman reports to a senior official whose character is played by Ompuri, Thats the only experienced role provided to him as a "Senior Official". I seriously dont understand .....sheer talent wasted...he was there to fill in the gaps I was dissapointed ...because I expected him to be given a role of substance.
However, In the encounter that follows Mr Don is caught but in a very sad state, making it muskhil for the police to obtain information of any kind.
Enter a new plot....The movie has its twists and turn which are quite interesting and thrilling. In the end the mukshkilain are overcome and all are a happy family
[I deliberately kept the later half concise, least I might reveal some more details]
However, there is one thing I dont understand, If Farhan Akhtar was so keen on his movie not being compared why did he keep mentioning in his interviews that DON was different....Why did he make the extra effort to even create some scenes the way they are.He was better off directing a new project altogether..... Gimmicks!!!
Over all the plot is good .Farhan Akhtar does manage to give the 3 hours of entertaiment .
We have always enjoyed masala movies and bollywood has always shown us these phases....There was a govinda phase a mithun phase and now its the remake phase.Let bollywood do their job of entertaining.... while we sit back and enjoy.
