Doordarshan, Govt. Of India’s national channel. It has the widest coverage among any other currently in India. Doordarshan ruled the roost for a long time, not because of its program quality, but for the monopoly. But since the Advent of Satellite and Cable Television, and the broadcast of superior quality program, D.D. is losing its shine and customer base.
Everything about Doordarshan, comes under Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. And the slackness of the Govt. totally reflects on the channel. Doordarshan doesn’t cover any mega sport event, nor does it have any quality serials - neither Sans-Bahu nor Mythological Wonders(Blunders). The quality and coverage of news has also come down in large proportion. News team at DD is totally confused, whether to cover national political rallies of the ruling Govt. (remember, Mo I&B), or to broadcast essential reports. With Aaj Tak, Zee News and NDTV; DD News has lost the word ’Scoop’ from their dictionary.
Nevertheless Doordarshan have added a lot of flavors to itself, let it be, DD Metro, Sports, Bharti or its regional channel. But all the flavors lack taste. DD Metro competes with Star Plus, Zee TV, SET etc. etc., DD Sports, against ESPN-Star, SET and Ten, Bharti for international, doesn’t have any one to compete with, because all the satellite TV nowadays get broadcasted throughout the world, and regional channels goes straight against the Private Regional Language channels, like Sun, ETV, Alpha, ETC etc. etc.!!!. The question is do they stand a chance.
We all know the answer for that matter, but the fact is no single channel can be good at all its dept. But DD being a national channel, all we ask is a bit of class and a bit quality.
Considering that DD still has the widest coverage, with a bit of quality it can bear the fruit for a long time.
If something is not done soon, ’I’ personally feel sorry for DD – Our National Channel.
