We went to Double Dutch resort in August 2008 for the long Independence Day weekend.
Getting there was a bit of a pain since they were widening the roads after Dindivanam & there were diversions everywhere. Traffic was also high.
After Dindigul we got lost thanks to more road & bridge constructions but finally made it. From Athoor village, our hosts had given us detailed directions so that was not a problem. The roads however are non existent & it was a bumpy ride.
Double Dutch is a homestay really, not a resort. It’s owned and run by a Dutch couple Gé and Gemma. They 1st came to India on a year long South East Asia tour in 1980. They went to Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Nepal and Bhutan. They loved India and Indonesia. In 1994 they apparently decided to relocate here and set up the Double Dutch farm. Gé welcomed us and told us to get comfortable. We were staying in a small cottage called Santhose House, a few feet away from the main building. We went to the main building which had the other 3 rooms and the kitchen. The verandah had lovely chairs and a great view of the lake.
Our hosts were warm & friendly & we had some interesting chats with them on living in India & specifically in that valley. Double Dutch farm is organic and eco friendly. They had a lot of animals - a cow, several hens and chicken, 3 dogs, countless cats and ducks that I saw.
The food at Double Dutch deserves a special mention. It was the yummiest Ive ever had. The cook makes his own bread, cheese & jam from whatever is grown in the resort. We looked forward to every meal.
Walking around the farm & learning about how things work there was very enlightening. All in all a wonderful holiday.
