“Dracula 2000” – R – New to Video/DVD
Dracula visits the year 2000; that can only mean trouble!
Matthew Van Helsing (Christopher Plummer) has a hidden room in his successful antiques business. One of his employees, Selena (Jennifer Esposito) and her boyfriend Marcus (Omar Epps) figure if it’s worth hiding in a secret room, then it must be worth a fortune. They enlist the help of some friends (Sean Patrick Thomas and Danny Masterson) to help them break into this room and steal the contents. When the robbery does not go as planned they take a sealed silver coffin figuring there is a treasure inside of it.
While aboard a plane to the Cayman Islands they figure out how to open the coffin; thus unleashing Dracula (Gerard Butler). He turns the thieves into vampires and ends up in New Orleans in search of a certain woman. This certain woman is Mary Van Helsing(Justine Waddell), Matthew’s only daughter. Matthew and his protégé Simon (Jonny Lee Miller) follow Dracula’s trail to New Orleans. Matthew has been following the life of Dracula for years and unlike regular vampires there is no way to completely kill Dracula. Plus, Selena and her friends are now also on the loose.
Dracula haunts Mary’s days and her nights. Why is it that he must have Mary? Can her father and Simon stop these monsters?
Joel Soisson wrote the screenplay and story and Patrick Lussier did the direction. The cast was fantastic! I cannot say enough good things about them. Some were only in the movie for a short while, as you can imagine, but the main characters were enthralling. Gerard Butler was the best Dracula I have seen in a film. He gave you the creeps yet drew you in, just like Dracula is supposed to do. Now I will have to find out all I can about this actor.
If you like movies about Dracula, stories about the bible (in this film they link Dracula back to the time of Jesus) and a few (Ok, more than a few) scenes of gore don’t bother you, then I highly recommend this film. The special effects were great and having the film take place in the year 2000 was a bonus. Give this movie a try, Dracula is waiting for you!
Enjoy!
