Just believe me on this-when the end credits started rolling, tears just came to my eyes & rolled down my cheeks. This was followed by more tears, but heavier than the previous ones.I bet this movie will have just as much impact on any one of you as it did on me.If not, then what to say?....................................YOU HAVE NO HEART!!!!!!
The movie starts with Peg Boggs(Wiest) going to a desolated mansion.Being an Avon saleslady, her sales instinct lures her to the spooky place. However, to her amazement, she notices that the lawns & gardens are beautifully decorated with grass sculptures. On enetering the house, she finds a poor innocent creature who has scissors in the place of hands. He tells her that his name is Edward(Johnny Depp).Peg realises that his handiwork(literally!) was the one she had witnessed in the mansions gardens.Peg is a warm & loving person, so she invites Edward over to stay in her place from that time on.Edward is intrigued by the strange modern stuff in the neighbourhood.Pegs nosy neighbours are at first disgusted at Pegs guts, but they too warm upto Edwards gardening & hairdressing talents. Some section of the neigbours though consider Edward to be devil-sent.Edward begins to hate his scissor-like hands when he meets Pegs daughter, Kim(Winona Ryder).Hes awestruck at her pure beauty. But Kim just thinks that hes a freak. Moreover, shes seriously involved with her boyfriend, Jim(Anthony Michael Hall).Jim takes advantage of Edward for a particular theft & poor ol Ed gets caught.Kim is ashamed when she finds out that Edward knew he was helping Jim for the theft, but did it only cause Kim requested Ed to.Also, Edward takes the whole blame on himself & never reveals the truth about the theft to Kims parents.Edward tends to get too emotional about things, especially Kim.He committs various vandalism acts to get over his rage. The only person who truly understands him is Kim.She feels that the more Edward tries to help normal people, the more theyll keep blaming him for their sufferrings.Kim dumps her boyfriend for Edward & soon another realisation dawns on her-howmuchever they both love each other, the hypocritic world would never allow them to be together. In the end, she takes a mature decision which invariably brings tears to your eyes.
Tim Burtons stories are great & thought provoking.Jonny Depp is excellent as the misunderstood-emo-rebel Edward.Winona is good too.One thinks that she should make a comeback. The characters get stuck to your mind, no matter what role they play in the movie. If you want to watch a movie on forbidden love without the usual exaggerated sentiments watch this. The emotions & heartbreak are so truly depicted that you feel them yourself.
