Partho Ghosh is back after a hiatus with yet another dud. This time, he comes up with Ek Second Jo Zindagi Badal De, an utterly rubbish and nonsensical film! Straightaway lifted from the film Sliding Doors, the flick just doesn’t make any sense even though the concept was innovative and new for Bollywood. The laughable climax and Sunil Singh’s performance ruins things even more!
The story of the movie: Shantanu Roy (M S Rana) is a writer who has come up with a book on destiny which teaches that a person gets what’s written in his/her fate. He desires his girlfriend Rashi (Manisha Koirala) to inaugurate this book. But on the D-day, she arrives late. Not wanting to waste much time, Shantanu tells his publisher and friend Sam (Sunil Singh) to do the needful. Just as Sam inaugurates Shantanu’s book, Rashi enters the room. She is ‘ek second’ late! Or else she would have got the chance to inaugurate and not Sam! Soon, viewers come to know that Rashi is unlucky and ‘ek second’ either saves her life or screws it. One day, she gets late for an office presentation due to which her boss suffers losses. She’s fired. Frustrated, she is returning back home. At the metro station, she is unable to board the train as, again, she is ‘ek second’ late! Suddenly, at this point, a person starts speaking in the background. He is curious to know as to what would have happened if Rashi had broken the ‘kismat ki dor’, arrived a second earlier and boarded that train! Thus, begins two parallel tracks in the film, one showing Rashi missing the train and the other showing Rashi boarding it! How her life changes just because of ‘ek second’ is what the film is all about!
Five minutes into the film and you’ll feel like stepping out of the theatre. The intro scene was quite tacky and dialogues plain stupid. Then came the first title song featuring Sunil Singh which is a put-off! The film then gets little on track and that’s what makes it watchable till the end. The sequence where the two parallel tracks commence was hilarious, especially the spoon feeding explanation given by the speaker! The intermission point was mediocre but the makers try to enhance impact by having a loud background score at this stage! The climax seemed bewildering. Throughout the film, makers were trying to preach that attempting to change your fate will lead to more satisfaction. But they end up showing the character Rashi more or less happy in both the tracks! And before you realize this, Sunil Singh is back giving love gyaan and some entertainment by dancing in the second title song! Picture khatam!
It is disappointing to see that Manisha Koirala now has to sign such films. M S Rana looks great and has great dialogue delivery. Nikeeta Anand (as Tamanna) has seductive eyes and suited the role of obsessive lover. Jackie Shroff was forgettable. Rozza Catalano was wasted. As for Sunil Singh, the less, the better! He’s Kamaal Rashid Khan part 2!
Story, as mentioned, was lifted from a Hollywood film. Nothing wrong with that but the writers and makers failed to treat it well. Dialogues were tad too preachy. Everyone is teaching something or the other in the film! Music was average but in many ways, the best part of the film!
On the whole, Ek Second Jo Zindagi Badal De is a poor show all the way! Watch it if you desire to see a complete ham film!
