Well Mohit Suri, the director has a signature style, in all his movies youll find a guy who has a serious problem with life, so you will find one here as well inEk Villain, which rides on the wave of high expectations and so it falters as well. There are many things for which you should watch this movie and many for which you dont, lets see one by one.
SPOILERS AHEAD! Guru(Siddharth Malhotra) is an henchman of Goas don Caeser(Remo Fernandes) who accidentally becomes a wish of Aisha Verma(Shraddha Kapoor) who is suffering from an unknown but non-curable disease, later we get an idea that it may be related to her brain, and she now has only few days left to live. They both fall in love in started living together, Guru decided to live a good life and leave his bad life behind but on the day of his 1st interview someone kills his life and now wife Aisha. Now he wants revenge and police led by a CBI officer(Shaad Randhawa) is also not interested in catching the criminal, since the CBI officer has a personal grudge with Guru and Caeser. There is another lower middle class guy named Rakesh Mahadkar(Riteish Deshmukh) who works in telephone department and he loves his wife Sulochana(Aamna Sharif) too much even though his wife is not always happy with him, so he put out his anger & frustration on some other women by killing them wearing a raincoat and gloves using his screw-driver. Now what will happen if two bad guys aka Villains in real-life will come face-to-face?
Though the movies poster, some scenes and basic plot looks eerily familiar to a Korean movie I saw the Devil, but the movie has written Bollywood all over it, interspersed with beautiful songs and signature style of Mohit Suri. He has given us some good movies likeKalyug, Awarapan andMurder 2, Raaz, and some okay movies likeZeherWoh Lamhe andAashiqui 2, this movie comes as one of the weakest ones from him if we do not countCrook, there is a common thing in these movies, which Ive mentioned earlier that one main guy of all his movies have serious issues with life, so here as well it is there, and then there is love story stuff with some good music, we all remember the good music of almost all his movies, not disappointed here as well, wonderful music given by Ankit Tiwari and Mithoon, and soulful lyrics as well, best song will beGaliyan andZarurat sung beautifully by the singers. The remaining songs are also good to hear, soft music and voice. The songs are well woven in the story which is not much of a thought, and it is a thriller but not a suspense movie, as there was no suspense, the movie frequently moves into past and present tense, and it didnt confused the viewer, theme of movie is slow, as all his movies are, sometimes it gets enjoyable, like a good romantic track is going on, but sometimes it becomes unbearable, so, this movie also seems a drag in its 2 hrs 10 min duration just like Mohits previous movieAashiqui 2. There are many loopholes in the movie for e.g. why the CBI guy letting all thing happen, he can control it but he is not at all controlling, and then sometimes he grab the hero, I think he was confused a bit on what to do and what not, then I was not able to solve the mystery of speaker phone, how could a mobile phones speaker got activated after falling down, and man the either the phone was of very high quality or the speaker at other end is speaking in a loud-speaker, as you are able to hear the sound very clearly even from a good distance and some more scenes like these. But some scenes are good, and made you emotional, for those scenes I must praise the effort put.
Riteish Deshmukh is the guy to watch here, if you must watch this movie, go for him, he has done brilliant job as a bad guy, sometimes his eyes looks a bit familiar to Shahrukh Khans eyes fromBaazigar orDarr, but Riteish pulled off his villainous act of psychopath very nicely, he can consider this arena too other than his forte of comedy. Siddharth Malhotra is a guy to look out for, he has a bright future, if anything I liked in SOTY, other than songs, it was him who looks promising(just like Sharman Joshi looked in front of Sahil Khan inStyle), but he needs a little more improvement. Rest all actors are either loud(read Shraddha Kapoor) or unmentionable(read Shaad Randhawa/Aamna Sharif) bad(read Remo Fernandes) or worst(Read Kamaal Rashid Khan), I am still out of my mind, why the heck did such a brilliant director chooses KRK in his movie and given him ample amount of screen space(he didnt even deserves 1/4th of a shot, and he actually got atleast 8 shots). Though I missed Emran Hashmi a lot, as per what I think, Mohit Suri is the first director who denies Emran a kiss in a movie, and I remember that role, since he comes out good in that one(as the porn shop owner in Kalyug), and he suits better in such roles, and looks much better in Mohit Suris films, but nonetheless Siddharth did good.
If youre a Mohit Suri fan like me, you should watch this movie, as instead of so many -ve things, the movie is still watchable, unlike many dumb movies like Hamshakals and stuff, atleast youll feel like your brain is still functioning. Take my advice, and go with the least expectation, then you may enjoy this movie, I will rate it 3/5 for nice attempt(it could be better), nice songs and a nice Riteish Deshmukh.
