The book "Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World II" is about positive and negative aspects of the US occupation of Japan after August, 1945. The historian John W. Dower analyzed attempts of American administration to lead Japan to the way of democracy and building a real democratic society in all senses, including economics. The first task of the American administator, Douglas Mac Arthur, was not to remove Emperor Hiroshito from the throne. That action would descend Japan into chaos, because for Japanese the image of Hiroshito was equal to the deity. Especially, you should like to pay attention while reading this book, to the administartion policy about such a hard in military plan and delicate in political one event as atomic bombardment of Hirishima and Nagasaki. That event with Japanese wars in China in Pacific and Southern Asis was the main trump for the anti-American propaganda of Left communist forces. In contrast, D. Mac Arthur protected the Emperor from any stereotype of the military leader. Thanks to him, ordinary Japanese saw democracy without principles of Marxist doctrine. Also, the search for reasons why they lost the war, made them to find an "acceptable" answer, development of science. The opening for many smaller companies was the goose that laid gold eggs. You meet, for example, with Nikon, Canon, Honda, Sony, and Komatsu. The large banks remained. That’s why I strongly recommend to study this bright book because, first, it shows one of the most successful American foreign policy, second, though Japan had became the pawn in America’s game against Soviet communism, the decimated country made a well coordinated economic trajectory, that permitted to dominate world markets with products from Sony apparatus to Toyota automobiles.
