This is yet another under-publicised gem of a movie, devoid of crowd-pulling stars.
The movie is supposed to be a true account of the defence of Stalingrad by the Russians against the invading German forces. This episode was crucial for the eventual defeat of Hitler.
The movie explains how wars are fought in the minds of individuals. Two snipers, played by Jude Law and Ed Harris, are pitted against each other. The former, an innocent Sergeant, is constantly prodded by two Commissars (Joseph Fiennes and Bob Hoskins), who work out the strategies in the background. Running in parallel is the love triangle involving Law, Weisz and Fiennes. The love story doesnt serve only commercial purposes, but also reveals the emotional dimension of soldiers.
The movie is absorbing throughout, in spite of a realism which reminds one of Saving Private Ryan. The full credit for that should go to the writer and director. Law (A.I.), Harris and Fiennes (Shakespeare In Love, Elizabeth) provide terrific acting, while James Horners music supplements the movie very well. Rachel Weisz (The Mummy) is adequate in yet another action-based role.
One thing which the viewer needs to forgive is the inconsistent use of Russian / German accents.
Movies, which move you, along with providing entertainment and information, are made rarely. So, better not miss this.
